Unterägeri combines walks by Lake Ägeri with a village centre where several chapters of local history can be traced. The Unterägeri Trail is a 7 km loop; the cross-country ski network comprises four trails totalling 18 km. There is also the seasonal Lido beach and a varied cultural programme. First choose the focus of your stay—hiking, cross-country skiing, the lake or culture—and plan your excursions around it.

Loop Trail and Panorama Trail

The Unterägeri Trail leads across open countryside with green fields and views of the mountains of the Zuger Oberland and Lake Ägeri. The loop is listed as taking 1 hour 40 minutes to walk, with an ascent of 80 metres. One possible detour leads to the lakeshore; Lake Ägeri is also part of the trail’s landscape from Wilbrunnen. The distance, walking time and ascent help you fit the loop into your day’s plans.

The Ägerital Panorama Trail is divided into three sections: from Unterägeri to Raten, from Raten to Morgarten, and from Morgarten back to Unterägeri along the left side of the lake. Native orchids grow along the trail; butterflies and birds can be observed. With a little luck, you may also spot roe deer, hares or capercaillies. The viewpoints look out over Rigi, Pilatus and the Mythen peaks, and, when visibility is good, as far as Säntis.

When visiting the moorland, please take specific precautions: dogs must be kept on a lead in its sensitive nature reserves. Wherever possible, stay on the paths in the moorland—including when cycling or riding.

Cross-country skiing in winter

The Unterägeri cross-country ski network comprises four trails totalling 18 km. The individual trail lengths are 8 km, 6 km, 3.5 km and 0.8 km. This range offers a choice of different distances; check the trail lengths before your winter visit.

Lake Ägeri: Beach and experiences

The Lido Unterägeri beach is a seasonal facility covering around 10,000 m². It offers views of Lake Ägeri and the Alps. Facilities include a sandy beach, a sunbathing lawn, water slides and diving towers. If you plan to visit the Lido, check the seasonal opening arrangements in advance.

Events and experiences on Lake Ägeri include music, family adventures and dining experiences. Another option is the bookable Ägeri theatre tour: it combines an entertaining walk with characters from Unterägeri’s past and lunch during a round trip on the lake. If you are planning your trip around it, check the dates and availability of the tour in advance.

Local history and culture

Unterägeri’s historic village centre reflects its transformation from a former farming village into an industrial village and important spa town, and eventually into the modern residential and working community it is today. The churches also tell the story of different periods. Marienkirche was built in the early 18th century on the site of a late Gothic church. Dreifaltigkeitskapelle was damaged during the French period around 1800 and took on its present form in 1824; a hermitage was built beside it in 1828. The present parish church, Heilige Familie, was consecrated in 1860.

The local history collection includes up to 5,000 objects relating to domestic life, crafts, trade and agriculture in Ägerital. The Meinrad Iten art collection includes up to 5,000 catalogued paintings by Ägeri artist Meinrad Iten (1867–1932). The MHSZ military heritage includes 13 fortifications in the municipality of Unterägeri. During the Second World War, Philippsburg was the most important bunker in Ägerital; it also housed Ägerital’s telephone exchange during the war.

Together with AEGERIHALLE, Kultur Ägeri offers a varied cultural programme for Ägerital throughout the year. If you are including an event in your travel plans, check the programme and the relevant dates.
