Vinzel’s distinctive character lies in the combination of winegrowing, historic architecture and paths along the edge of the forest. To the north, the vineyard slope is clearly bounded by the forest edge; the surrounding area is home to extensive vineyards alongside farmland and wooded areas. Vinzel is in the La Côte AOC wine region. From various points around the village, you can enjoy views of Lake Geneva and the Alps, including Mont Blanc.
Landscape and historic settlement
Vinzel’s original settlement is clearly shaped by winegrowing and runs along a very steep, wall-lined street. The vineyards and the old settlement layout give the village distinct but interconnected points of reference.
Houses, estates and architectural history
The Maison Gothique is one of the oldest houses in the canton of Vaud. Partially weathered Gothic IHS letters are carved into its lintel; its doors and windows feature curved, accolade-shaped designs. The inscription and curved forms are two different architectural details of the same house.
The Château de Vinzel is a wine estate with a manor house, outbuildings and a small tower arranged around a courtyard that opens south towards the garden. The manor house dates back to 1629; the château includes vaulted cellars. The Château de la Bâtie presents a different architectural profile: it overlooks the village and is classified as a historic monument. Built in 1725, the manor house incorporated an existing tower and a vaulted cellar.
Trails through forests and wine country
The Sentier des Châtaignes is a six-kilometre circular route connecting Luins, Vinzel and Bursins. The footpath, established in 1998, runs along the lower edge of the forests of Vinzel. Around fifty species of trees and shrubs are identified along the trail with small signs, making the variety of woody plants a distinctive feature of the route.
The Balade Oenotouristique de Vinzel–Bursins is about 5.5 kilometres long and can start in the centre of Vinzel. The route lengths are similar; the Sentier is a circular route connecting three villages, while the option to start the wine trail in the village centre provides an additional point of reference.
On the Bassins–Bursins stage, the Via Cluny 01 passes through Begnins, Luins, Vinzel and Bursins. It offers a way to discover Cluniac heritage in French-speaking Switzerland. Vinzel is also included on the Nyon-to-Rolle route of the Via Huguenots Suisse 04. For these routes, it is worth checking the latest information and conditions before setting off.
The villages along the Balade Oenotouristique, including Vinzel, have free parking and PostBus stops. As local arrangements may change, check the latest information in advance.
Wine and regional products
At the Château de Vinzel, tastings of old Chasselas vintages are offered in a secret room in the cellar. The tasting cellar and the Domaine de la Tuilière’s pergola, which is open in summer, can be rented for groups of up to 20 people. Ask about the current availability of these offers before visiting.
Biscotte’s small farm shop in Vinzel sells produce from its own fields as well as artisan products from the region; its selection may change. One historical trace of regional cuisine leads to Malakoffs: according to the history of Au Coeur de la Côte, the first cheese crusts from which they developed were introduced in 1897. The croûtes de Vinzel are now known as Malakoffs.
