In Saint-George, hiking trails lead to a variety of discoveries: a spring that flows year-round, viewpoints and historic buildings. There are also opportunities for winter activities, climbing and regional food trails. When planning your stay, you can choose whether you’d rather go hiking, explore cultural history or spend time in the snow.

Hiking options for different time budgets

The trail from Col du Marchairuz to Saint-George passes the Rocher de l’Eau Pendante, a rock with a spring that flows all year round. The walking path continues to the village centre, where the offices of Parc naturel régional Jura vaudois are located. In the wider park area, there are hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels, which are marked and connected to public transport. This regional overview is useful if you want to choose your hike not only by destination, but also by route profile and transport connections.

For a manageable outing, consider the Mont-Chaubert loop: it is rated easy and takes about one hour and 17 minutes. Forest paths, picnic spots and panoramic views stretching from the Fribourg Pre-Alps to the Lake Geneva basin define the route. With a little luck, you may spot birds, roe deer, red deer and other forest animals along the way. Sightings are possible, but not guaranteed.

The La Roche du Ciel hiking trail follows forest paths to the Refuge de la Roche du Ciel, with views of the basin, the Alps and Saint-George along the way. The 3.5-kilometre route is listed as taking about one hour and 15 minutes. La Roche du Ciel is also known as a viewpoint overlooking the Jura. The stated times for the La Roche du Ciel hike and the Mont-Chaubert loop are similar; the Mont-Chaubert loop is rated easy, while the La Roche du Ciel trail is described by its length and duration.

Winter trails, climbing and views

Saint-George has two alpine ski slopes and a snow park. There are 22 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, groomed several times a week. There is also a lit 1.8-kilometre route with two loops. These offer different winter options: alpine slopes and a snow park on the one hand, and cross-country ski trails and a shorter lit loop on the other. In the wider area of Parc naturel régional Jura vaudois, winter activities also include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Parc Aventure de St-George is a high ropes course in a forest setting at an altitude of 1,000 metres in the Jura vaudois. Its facilities include a 15-metre-high climbing pole with a self-belay system. The park offers views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. Another climbing option is the area around Rocher de La Baume, which has 54 equipped routes graded from 4a to 8b+. The climbing area is 500 metres below Saint-George, on the cantonal road between Gimel and Saint-George.

Building history and regional delights

Four Ă  chaux de St-George dates back to 1857 and was restored in 1991 to mark the 700th anniversary of the Swiss Confederation. Guided explanations of how rock is turned into lime are available on request. Moulin de St-George also has a long history: its first documented mention dates from 1548, and a hydraulic saw was installed in 1816. Fondation pour la sauvegarde du Patrimoine offers guided tours of Moulin-Scierie.

Savurando offers another way to explore history and crafts. This heritage and food trail highlights various traditional crafts and includes tastings of agricultural products along the route. The loop is 7.5 kilometres long. Allow about two hours for walking and approximately three and a half to five hours for the full experience. These figures distinguish walking time from the time needed for the entire experience. Fromagerie – Epicerie Mignot offers Gruyère, Vacherin Mont-d’Or and homemade charcuterie.

Glacière de Saint-George is another natural wonder: ice remains in the cave all year round. It is currently closed. To plan your trip, you can compare the available activities—hiking, cultural heritage, climbing and winter activities—with their stated durations or access restrictions, then look for suitable hotels in Saint-George.
