Rolle lies on the north-western shore of Lake Geneva, between Nyon and Lausanne. The town is part of the La Côte wine-growing region and offers views of the high Alps. The green surroundings of Ile de La Harpe offer further perspectives: from there, the view stretches across Lake Geneva to Rolle Castle and the surrounding mountains. The wine-growing landscape, lake and Alpine views thus offer distinct landscape highlights.
An Island with a History
Ile de La Harpe was built around 1835 by local merchants on a sandbank to protect the harbour to the west. An obelisk dedicated to Frédéric César de La Harpe was erected on the island and inaugurated on 26 September 1844. De La Harpe was born in Rolle in 1754 and lived until 1838. As tutor to Alexander I of Russia, he played a key role in the independence of the canton of Vaud from Bern. The town’s name can also be traced back in time: Rolle was first mentioned as “Rotuli” in 1294; later historical forms of the name include “Ruello” and “Ruelloz”. The island’s construction and the obelisk thus represent two different historical questions: the protection of a harbour and the commemoration of a person from Rolle.
Swimming and Water Sports at Plage de Rolle
Plage de Rolle is at the eastern end of the municipality and provides access to the lake in green surroundings. Swimming is possible there; the bathing area is unsupervised, but is marked out and protected by a line of buoys. Check the conditions on site before swimming. Stand-up paddleboards and pedal boats are rented out seasonally; check availability before your trip. There is also a launch point for paddleboards and windsurfing boards. Swimming, rentals and launching are separate amenities: for swimming, note that the area is unsupervised but marked out, while rentals are seasonal.
Theatre and Architecture
The Casino Théâtre is housed in a building that celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2021. The auditorium is designed after Italian theatres: its floor plan is horseshoe-shaped and it also has a balcony. From August to May, the venue presents an artistic programme featuring guest performances and co-productions with theatre companies from the region and beyond. The architecture and programme offer two different perspectives on the theatre: the layout is a specific architectural feature, while performances depend on the programme at the time. Check current performances before your visit.
Getting There and Planning Your Trip
Do not plan to visit the interior of Rolle Castle; only the courtyard is open to the public. Check access information before your visit. CFF timetables for 2026 are available for departures from Rolle railway station; check your specific departure before travelling. When choosing your travel dates, you can compare two offerings: rentals at Plage de Rolle are seasonal, while the Casino Théâtre’s artistic programme runs from August to May. If both matter to you, check rentals and the programme separately for your travel dates.
