Chavannes-De-Bogis is located in the canton of Vaud, in the Nyon district and the Terre Sainte region. The Versoix flows through the municipality; a riverside path starts here and follows the river to its mouth near the small town of Versoix. The village also has an agricultural history, protected moorland and local leisure activities. This makes it easy to tailor a stay to different interests: riverside paths, nature and landscapes, or the history of Bogis and Chavannes-De-Bogis.
Versoix and Moorland
The riverside path connects Chavannes-De-Bogis to a longer river route: it follows the Versoix to its mouth near Versoix. The Combes Chapuis nature reserve on the Versoix is also near Chavannes-De-Bogis. Oak forests, meadows and marshes shape the landscape there. The route and the protected area thus offer two different points of interest for anyone interested in the river valley.
The “Marais de la haute Versoix” is also part of this natural area. The Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance (IFP 1207) includes part of the municipality. It describes the Marais as an extensive alluvial marshland complex on the plain, with dense forest cover, and counts it among the region’s last large, well-preserved marshlands. The inventory area is therefore a distinctive landscape feature of Chavannes-De-Bogis, but the whole municipality should not be equated with the marshland.
Agriculture and Local History
Chavannes-De-Bogis is considered an agricultural village, with grain cultivation and vineyards. In 2009, agricultural land accounted for 58.6 percent and forests for 12.3 percent. These dated figures offer a specific snapshot of land use at that time and complement the rural character that defines the village.
The history of the place name goes back a long way: Chavannes-De-Bogis was first mentioned around 1477–1485 under the name “Cabane de Bogiez.” The area of Bogis became the centre of an agricultural estate, which the Cistercians called a “grange” or “cabane.” In 1269, the abbey placed the people settled on the land of the grange of Chavannes-De-Bogis under the protection of Simon de Joinville, Lord of Gex. Thus, the terms “grange” and “cabane” refer to agricultural use, while the record from 1269 offers insight into the protection arrangements of the time.
Another point of reference in time is the chapel built in Chavannes-De-Bogis in 1928. Together with the medieval history of the grange and the earliest recorded form of the name, it forms part of a long local history made up of several clearly dated milestones.
Playground and Horse-Riding Activities
Near the village centre, next to the municipal centre, there is a play and picnic area in a tree-lined square, with an open-access meadow. The listed facilities include spring riders, a small hut, a slide, a zip line, a table tennis table, table football and other children’s games. Facilities may change; check the latest information before visiting. From Nyon railway station, the area can be reached on TPN buses 813 and 814. Check the route before travelling.
The Poney Club de Chavannes-De-Bogis is another way to include horse-related activities in your stay. An activity description updated on 11 February 2026 lists riding lessons and age-appropriate activities for children aged two and up. The Baby Pony programme includes animal care, petting and feeding, games, riding lessons in the indoor arena and rides in nature; parents can take part. Dressage and show jumping are also listed for more advanced riders. As activities may change, check directly with the Poney Club before visiting to find out what is currently available.
Practical Planning
Please note a temporary traffic restriction when planning your journey. A cantonal notice for 2026 states that the section of cantonal road RC 3-7 between the Place de la Placette roundabout and the junction with the cantonal road towards Tannay will be completely closed until mid-November 2026. If your journey involves this section, check the latest closure information before setting off. For planning your time in the area, there are several specific options: the riverside path, the river landscape, local history and the leisure activities mentioned above. Choose the ones that suit your stay.
