Begnins brings together a historic village center shaped by the Middle Ages, a wine-growing heritage and opportunities to explore on foot. If you are planning a short break, you can focus on historic buildings, wine, or routes in the village and its wider surroundings.
Village history spanning several centuries
The church in Begnins dates back to the 13th century. The Manoir probably originated in the 14th century and was rebuilt in 1631. The Auberge de l’Ecu Vaudois dates from the last quarter of the 18th century. Together, these buildings show that the village’s historic character developed over several centuries.
Begnins also has a medieval village center and several castles, including Martheray, Cottens, Menton and Rochefort. Their different construction dates and names offer more than one point of connection with the village’s history. If you are particularly interested in heritage, you can explore both early historical links and buildings from later centuries.
Winegrowing and interactive discoveries
Begnins is located in the La CĂ´te wine region. The Domaine de Serreaux-Dessus, on the heights above Begnins, was already being cultivated during the Bernese period in the 16th century. From May to December, cellar tours and tastings are available by appointment on weekdays and on Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Confirm the dates and availability of visits in advance.
The 5.5-hectare Domaine des Combes offers the chance to discover eight grape varieties: Chasselas, Chardonnay, Doral, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Garanoir, Gamaret and Merlot. The estate lies on the boundary between the municipalities of Begnins and Luins and offers views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. The wine experience therefore combines grape variety diversity with the landscape between the two municipalities.
The interactive Balade Oenotouristique de Luins-Begnins is about 5.5 kilometers long. It starts either at the Caveau des Vignerons de Luins or in the center of Begnins, and shares knowledge about regional winegrowing methods while offering a playful introduction to the history of both villages. Before setting off, check the details of the interactive format and app availability.
Explore on foot, by bike or on a discovery tour
A shorter version of the Sentier des Toblerones can start in Begnins. The section near Begnins features a railway bridge for pedestrians that was intended to be used to block the Toblerones in the event of an attack. Further afield, the Sentier is a historic nature trail running alongside anti-tank obstacles and is suitable for a family walk. Check current trail conditions before setting off.
The Jeu de piste de Begnins invites you to discover the village on a treasure hunt. The activity takes about two hours and is available free of charge from the municipal administration; confirm in advance whether it is available during your visit. If you prefer to get around by bike, consider the Balade à vélo autour de Begnins: it starts in Begnins and follows the Route de Burtigny. Check route conditions in advance for this tour as well.
The village and its wider surroundings feature extensive vineyards, paths and views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. For a hike further afield, Mont Sâla offers panoramic views of Lake Geneva, the Alps and La Dôle. Le Vaud is also home to Parc animalier La Garenne, where families can learn more about Swiss wildlife. These destinations complement the village and wine experiences with nature and wildlife, without being confused with the attractions in the village center.
