With its four round towers, the Château de Morges faces Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc. Louis de Savoie had it built between 1286 and 1291; it is considered a typical example of the Savoyard castle type known as “carré savoyard”. Museums, architecture, a park, and a market offer a variety of cultural highlights for a stay in Morges, complemented by seasonal events and lakeside activities.
Heritage and museums in Morges
The château houses five museums. At the Musée Paderewski, you can learn more about Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860–1941), the Polish pianist, composer, and politician to whom the museum is dedicated. The exhibition is designed to be modern and interactive. An audio description is available for visitors with visual impairments; check before your trip whether this service is currently available.
The Musée Alexis Forel is the oldest museum in the town. It is housed in a 14th-century building classified as a Swiss cultural property of national significance. The program includes temporary exhibitions, graphic art, and printmaking, as well as cultural activities, concerts, readings, and workshops. The Musée Bolle focuses on temporary exhibitions about the heritage of Morges and its region. Each summer, it also presents a recurring exhibition about Audrey Hepburn, usually from late June to early September. Dates and presentation may change.
The Protestant Temple also brings together several eras: it was first built in the 14th century and rebuilt between 1769 and 1771 to plans by Erasme Ritter. Today, it is classified as a cultural property of national significance. Numerous classical and organ music concerts are held there throughout the year; check the current program for specific dates.
Park, lakeside, and seasonal experiences
The Parc de l’Indépendance lies on Lake Geneva, between the château and the Morges River. More than 50 tree species are maintained there, including chestnut trees planted in 1750. In spring, the park hosts the Fête de la Tulipe, when more than 100,000 flowers adorn the grounds; the number of flowers and the program may vary. The park’s name is also closely linked to the town’s history. It was given its name on January 24, 1898, when a monument to three patriotic figures from Morges—Jean-Jacques Cart, Jules Muret, and Henri Monod—was unveiled during celebrations marking the centenary of Vaud’s independence.
For a longer walk by the water, the Promenade du littoral de Morges runs from the old town and the Parc de l’Indépendance along the lakeshore to Préverenges. The route is accessible to people with reduced mobility. As path conditions and accessibility information may change, it is advisable to check before your visit.
Market, guided tours, and insights into the region
The traditional market is held year-round on Wednesday and Saturday mornings in the pedestrianized Grand-Rue. Regional produce and handicrafts are on offer. If the market is an important part of your plans, check the dates before you travel. In addition to exploring independently, visitors can join free guided tours subsidized by the town in summer. From June to September, themes may include famous figures, churches, or architecture; these vary by season. Private group tours can be booked year-round and must be arranged in advance.
The Petit Train touristique de Morges offers another way to see the town and its surroundings. It operates seasonally from April to October and travels along the lake, through historic lanes, and through vineyards. The town tour also follows Lake Geneva and passes through the historic center. Check the timetable and departure times before your trip.
Wine culture can also be part of your plans. One bookable experience takes you through the La Côte vineyards and stops at a Vins de Morges winemaker for a guided tasting; confirm availability in advance. Offered by the Morges region, the Forfait Dégustation lets you discover 17 renowned wineries belonging to the Association des Vins de Morges: for CHF 15, you can taste four different wines at a winery of your choice. Participating wineries and conditions may change. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests, from heritage at the château and museums to the market, lakeside, and wine.
