Le Sentier lies in the Vallée de Joux in the canton of Vaud, is part of the municipality of Le Chenit, and is situated at an altitude of around 1,000 m. Vaud’s mountains, waterways, and forests surround the village. There are several ways to explore it: the exceptional length of the historic village center, the moorland of the Sagne du Sentier, and the Galerie de l’Essor. The history of the place name and watchmaking are also among the distinct features that characterize Le Sentier.

A Village Along the Grande-Rue

The historic village center is laid out as a street village. The Grande-Rue is lined on both sides with a row of buildings dating from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Le Sentier is considered a street village of exceptional length. The village’s first temple was built in 1612. The village’s history can therefore be traced both through a dated building and through the distinctive layout of its center.

Le Sentier is the administrative seat of the municipality of Le Chenit and was the main town of the former district of La Vallée until the end of August 2006. The place name was first mentioned in 1611 as “Sendey”; the first inhabitants mostly came from the municipality of Le Lieu. These historical details add to the picture of a place whose history unfolds across several periods.

Gallery and Watchmaking

The Galerie de l’Essor offers a cultural attraction in the village. The 150 m² exhibition hall opened in 1981 and showcases artists from Switzerland and around the world. Around ten exhibitions are presented there each year. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular exhibition, check the current program before visiting.

Watchmaking is also part of Le Sentier’s story: several Swiss watch manufacturers have production facilities here. Jaeger-LeCoultre has been based in Le Sentier since 1833; other manufacturers include Gérald Genta, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin. Alongside the historic village center and the temple, this manufacturing history offers another perspective on the village’s development.

Moorland and Walking Trail

The Sagne du Sentier is a moorland area listed in the Federal Inventory of Raised Bogs. On the Sentier de la sagne, raised walkways allow visitors to stroll through the moor without harming its sensitive natural environment. The route is 1.30 km long and starts at the “Le Sentier-L’Orient, gare” stop. This gives you both the distance and a specific starting point for planning your visit.

Route details and transport services may change. Check the latest route information and timetables before setting out. The landscape around Le Sentier, with its mountains, waterways, and forests, provides a wider setting for your visit; the moorland trail takes you specifically through the protected Sagne.

Market and Travel Planning

The municipality holds a market in Le Sentier every Thursday morning. If the market is important to your travel plans, check the current calendar in advance. A tourist bus also runs on weekends from Le Sentier via the Marchairuz to Rolle. Check the current timetable for this service, as the route and operating days may change.

The market and bus service offer different scheduling options: the market takes place on Thursday mornings, while the tourist bus runs on weekends. Plan according to which option is relevant to your stay, and check the dates before you travel.
