Aigle combines winegrowing, culture and outdoor activities. Château d’Aigle houses a wine museum; vineyards, signposted routes and outdoor attractions each offer a different focus. When choosing where to stay, consider both your interests and which dates and routes fit your travel plans.

Winegrowing, Château and Museum

Château d’Aigle lies at the heart of a renowned winegrowing region. Its oldest section was probably built in the late 12th century by the family of the Knights of Aigle, the Milites de Allio. The Château is home to the Musée de la vigne, du vin, de l’étiquette. Among other topics, it explores landscape, biodiversity, taste education, ecology, economics and art. The collection includes more than 10,000 objects related to winegrowing, wine and associated professions, as well as over 400,000 wine labels.

The vineyards give the subject a tangible dimension: they cover 132 hectares, and white grape varieties account for more than 80 percent of production. La Pinte du Paradis at the Château has a terrace overlooking the vineyards where regional wines can be tasted. At Quart d’Heure in the centre of Aigle, a winery hosts a wine tasting on the last Thursday of each month. Check the current date if you plan to attend.

Below the Château, among the vineyards, lies the Quartier du Cloître, one of the city’s oldest inhabited districts. This offers a way to combine the wine theme with a look at the town’s historic neighbourhoods, without limiting your stay to the museum and a tasting.

Wine Trails and Hikes

The Sentier des vignes is a 30-kilometre wine-tourism hiking route between Yvorne and Saint-Maurice that passes through Aigle. In the Chablais, it connects wine cellars and major tourist attractions on foot. The trail is open year-round and signposted. If you are looking for a much shorter route, consider the Via Francigena from Aigle to Ollon: it is 4.62 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of 1 hour and 35 minutes.

In summer, hiking trails also lead from the historic lanes of the old town to sunny ridges above the Rhône plain. For a viewpoint, consider the Belvédère du Plantour, at an elevation of 627 metres; from there, the view takes in Aigle, the vineyards and Lake Geneva. The route, distance and viewpoint appeal to different interests and can be considered as separate highlights of a stay.

Forest Trails and Activities

The Parcours VITA d’Aigle is just under 1.5 kilometres long and follows forest paths through the Fahy forest. There are 43 exercises at 15 stations, focusing on strength, endurance, mobility and balance. The course can also be used as a family trail and offers opportunities to observe birds and small animals. Some stations may have changed.

At Parc Aventure Aigle, twelve forest courses cater to different ability levels; four are designed specifically for children aged 4 to 7. Visitors move from tree to tree using a climbing harness. The youngest participants use a continuous safety line. Check the current operating conditions before your trip if you plan to visit.

Another route with its own theme is the Sentier Aigle-Loup, which introduces walkers to the legend of the Aigle-Loup. Alongside sporting exercises and climbing courses, there are also trails with a story to tell.

Dates and Choosing Where to Stay

Church tours are offered seasonally: the Catholic parish of Aigle organises them in July and August on Fridays at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. at Église St-Maurice et St-Nicolas de Flüe. Check the dates before travelling if you would like to include a tour in your stay.

Aigle is a rail and road network hub, with direct connections to nine well-known Alpine resorts. This is a practical consideration when choosing accommodation if you also want to include those resorts in your plans. The wine museum and castle, wine routes, viewpoint and forest activities offer different reasons to choose the focus of your stay according to the season and your personal interests.
