The Moulins de la Tine are a testament to Troistorrents’ long history of milling: archival records mention them as early as 1401. The VIMOTI Museum, chapels and old bread ovens offer different insights into the village’s history. If you prefer exploring outdoors, you’ll also find described hikes through gorges and along the Vièze.

Mills, Machinery and Exhibitions

At the Vieux Moulins de la Tine, you can visit the VIMOTI Museum, which is open to the public. The facilities open to visitors include working mills, the stamp mill area, the press and the forge, as well as the miller’s chalet. Permanent exhibitions are devoted to hemp and crafts related to wood. As of 2024, the Moulins de la Tine are listed in the Canton of Valais inventory as a Category B cultural asset.

The museum is open from mid-May to the end of September; check the current opening calendar before your visit. The historic site is located in the Tine gorges and is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. These seasonal opening dates and accessibility are important points to consider when planning your visit.

Churches, Chapels and Village History

The Église Sainte Marie-Madeleine was built in 1702 and is classified as a cultural asset. Its 40-metre-high Gothic bell tower and Baroque altars give the building two distinct architectural features. The chapels also span several centuries: the Chapelle de St-André is mentioned in documents as early as 1486, the Chapelle du Pas was built on 24 December 1652, and the Chapelle de Chemex was built by Pierre Carraux in 1682.

Everyday life of the past is reflected in the Four de Propéraz. Built in 1663, the oven is a reminder of a time when several village neighbourhoods had their own bread ovens. Bread is baked in the Four banal de Propéraz several times a year, for visitors and local residents alike. If you’d like to plan your visit around a baking date, check the relevant dates. The Galerie de la Tine offers another perspective on local cultural heritage: its 300-square-metre permanent exhibition features sculptures, chalet furniture, folk art, paintings and rustic objects from the 17th to the 21st century. The gallery is housed in a listed chalet, built in 1846 and restored.

Hikes and Trails

The circular hike to the Pont du Diable is listed as 2.1 kilometres long, with 176 metres of ascent and descent and a duration of 1 hour and 15 minutes; it is rated easy. On the route, you cross the Gorges de la Vièze twice: over the stone Pont du Diable and over the suspension bridge between Chenarlier and Troistorrents. The stone bridge dates from 1936. Check the conditions on the route and at the bridges before setting out.

The orange cultural trail from Troistorrents offers a different kind of route. It follows paved paths, is very flat and quiet, and offers views of the Rhône plain and the mountains. The La Vièze en Fayot circular hike between Troistorrents and Val-d’Illiez pairs views of the Dents Blanches with a walk along the La Vièze river. The Passerelle de Troistorrents is 185 metres long and 75 metres high; it may be closed in winter in icy conditions. The trails therefore differ not only in scenery, but also in their route characteristics and conditions.

Winter and Practical Information

Troistorrents is considered a gateway to the Région Dents du Midi. Morgins is a winter sports resort within the municipality and is part of the Portes du Soleil ski area. This is a useful point of reference if you’re planning a stay focused on winter sports; the local history and hiking trails offer different highlights.

The Parking de la Tine is at the entrance to the village below the church and offers 200 covered parking spaces. From there, the village centre, shops, hiking trails and other destinations in the region are easy to reach. A local link to cheese culture is the ageing cellar at La Cavagne Troistorrents, visible from the shop and with space for 16,000 cheese wheels.
