Fieschertal is a village and municipality in the Goms district of the canton of Valais. The village lies in the valley of the Wysswasser; the municipality includes high mountains and large glaciers. There are various activities to choose from when planning your trip: winter hiking trails and snowshoe trails in the Fieschertal/Fiesch area, walks and mountain tours across the municipality’s extensive territory, and experiences such as the SaurierTrail. The season plays an important role, as several activities depend on the season, weather or safety conditions.

Wysswasser, mountains and glaciers

The Wysswasser flows from the Fiescher Glacier and eventually joins the RhĂ´ne. The Wysswasser Trail leads from Fiesch through lush natural surroundings into Fieschertal; there are secluded spots along the Wysswasser where you can stop and relax. This is a way to discover the landscape along a specific trail and river course, without confusing either with the trails across the entire municipality.

The municipality includes part of the Aletsch Glacier and the entire Fiescher Glacier. Jungfrau, Mönch, Fiescherhorn, Finsteraarhorn and Aletschhorn are among the mountains associated with the area or situated along its edges. Lake Märjelen is also part of the area. These names give an idea of the vast landscape that extends beyond the village in the valley.

Winter trails and activities in the snow

The Fieschertal/Fiesch area has 12 kilometres of winter hiking trails and marked snowshoe trails. Winter hiking and snowshoeing are therefore two distinct ways to explore the surroundings during the cold season. Access to the trails may vary depending on snow and safety conditions; snowshoe trails are also subject to seasonal and weather-related conditions. Check local conditions if you are planning one of these activities for a particular day.

The Blätz ski lift in Fieschertal is particularly suitable for children learning to ski. Its operating dates may vary by season, so it is helpful to check the schedule before your visit. Tobogganing is also possible, with Ghosky sleds available for hire. Check local availability in winter. When choosing when to travel, you can distinguish between winter hiking, snowshoeing, tobogganing and the ski lift, rather than treating these activities as a single programme that is always available.

Walks, mountain tours and other activities

The municipality’s extensive territory offers both leisurely walks and adventurous mountain tours. Some trails may be subject to seasonal safety restrictions, and conditions and route safety for mountain tours vary by season.

Fieschertal also has a climbing garden. Before climbing, check the current local safety conditions. Mountain biking tours are also available in the Fieschertal/Fiesch area; route conditions and permitted use may change seasonally. Fieschertal/Fiesch is considered one of Switzerland’s best-known centres for hang gliding and paragliding. Flying activities depend on the weather and local providers’ conditions.

The SaurierTrail Fieschertal offers a different way to explore: it takes visitors into the world of dinosaurs and on a journey through millions of years of prehistory. Those interested in the history of the village rather than a sporting activity will also find a specific point of interest: Fieschertal was first mentioned in 1351 under the name “vallis de Viesthen”, meaning “valley of Vies”.

Suspension bridge and local history

The Aspi-Titter suspension bridge connects the municipalities of Bellwald and Fieschertal. The walk to the bridge from Fieschertal takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. This approximate walking time helps with planning your schedule; also take into account the bridge’s recurring seasonal winter closure.

The history of transport also has a clear time frame: the construction of the road in 1964 and 1965 connected Fieschertal to the transport network. Together, local history, the river landscape and the various activities reveal several sides of Fieschertal, without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.
