A hike with a specific distance and duration, the Chemin des 700 ans with its open-air exhibition, and the chapel give Prarreyer a clearly defined character. This offers a choice of different focuses for planning: nature, a route associated with cycling, and cultural details in the village.
Location and getting there
Prarreyer is a hamlet of Versegères in the municipality of Val de Bagnes in the Swiss canton of Valais. It lies in the Val de Bagnes on the left bank of the Dranse de Bagnes, between Versegères and Montagnier.
The Versegères, Le Liappey bus stop is near the settlement. It is served by the Le Châble–Sarreyer bus route, operated by Transports de Martigny et Régions. Check the current timetable for your travel date before setting off.
Hiking from Prarreyer
The “A la rencontre du Verbier sauvage” hike starts in the village of Prarreyer. It is 9.0 kilometres long and is listed as taking 3 hours and 40 minutes. The route passes through coniferous forests, over steep pastures and alongside rushing streams. This sequence gives a concrete sense of the tour’s landscape: forest, open pastures and waterways are all part of its described route.
The stated distance and duration help you fit the hike into your day’s plans. Check the route details before setting off, as route information may be updated. This way, the stated duration remains a planning estimate and is not mistaken for a guarantee of conditions on the day of the hike.
Chemin des 700 ans and open-air exhibition
The Chemin des 700 ans runs from Versegères through Prarreyer. An official summer map from 2021 shows it as a mountain-bike route through the village. As trail conditions and classifications may change, check the latest route details before riding.
The open-air exhibition “Les Secrets du Val de Bagnes” can be seen along the Chemin des 700 ans. It consists of large-format photographs that came out of encounters between eleven artists and the valley’s residents. The route thus combines its function as a trail with a cultural perspective on the Val de Bagnes: the exhibition focuses on encounters between artists and people from the valley.
Chapel and tradition
The chapel of Prarreyer is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Flüe. Its round shape is more reminiscent of transalpine buildings than of other chapels in Valais. The chapel contains a fresco by the Genevan painter Albert Chavaz, who was born in Savièse. Its shape, dedication and fresco give the building several distinct cultural features that set it apart from the themes of the two routes.
A traditional procession is also associated with the chapel: on the evening of 15 August, it goes from the chapel to the Oratoire de Versegères in the vicinity of Prarreyer. To choose between the two trail themes, a simple distinction can be made: the hike has a stated length and duration; the Chemin focuses on its route, its designation for cycling on a 2021 map, and its exhibition. The chapel adds architecture, art and tradition to these themes.
