The Mendrisiotto is Switzerland’s southernmost region and borders Lombardy. Mendrisio is the main town of the district of the same name, which comprises eleven municipalities. Visitors planning a stay here will find special points of interest in its geological history, cultural heritage and wine country.

Fossils and Geological Trails

The forested, pyramid-shaped Monte San Giorgio on Lake Lugano is considered the world’s best fossil record of marine life from the Triassic period, 245 to 230 million years ago. Fossil-bearing rock outcrops with intact strata can be accessed on the mountain. The geo-palaeontological educational trail starts in Meride; information panels accompany the route. At the Parco archeologico di Tremona, ten stations with augmented reality applications add to the experience. The digital installations can be updated.

The Parco delle Gole della Breggia in the lower Valle di Muggio offers a different geological landscape. It lies between Castel San Pietro, Balerna, Morbio Inferiore and Morbio Superiore, and features rocks of geological and palaeontological interest that are hundreds of millions of years old. The Percorso del cemento leads through a disused cement factory in the heart of the park. For this route, both the two-kilometre length and the approximate three-hour duration are useful for planning; check current trail conditions before your visit.

Townscapes, Art and Tradition

The Mendrisiotto is home to architectural and artistic works dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. Numerous churches and monasteries shape the townscape of Mendrisio and are considered Swiss cultural heritage worthy of protection. One example from the 18th century is the Church of San Giovanni Battista. The Holy Week Passion processions take place in the historic old town on the evenings of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. During the processions, 260 transparencies depict biblical scenes and symbols. The Good Friday procession includes more than 500 ceremonial objects, including 320 lanterns bearing symbols of the Passion of Christ. As the exact dates depend on Easter, check the dates for the relevant year when planning your trip.

In Ligornetto, the Museo Vincenzo Vela is considered the most important artist’s house in Switzerland to have survived intact. Its main collection comprises plaster models of almost all the sculptural works created by Vincenzo Vela. In Mendrisio, the architectural history of Villa Argentina also tells of a specific historical context: Antonio Croci built it in 1873–1874 as a private residence for Giovanni Bernasconi.

Trails and Trip Planning

The Mendrisiotto has 340 kilometres of trails for hiking, accessible year-round. The Parco della Valle della Motta covers 163 hectares. A network of footpaths has been restored there, linking various municipalities in the Basso Mendrisiotto. Visitors planning to reach the summit of Monte Generoso can take the historic rack railway of the Ferrovia del Monte Generoso; check the timetable before your trip.

The Sentiero del Marmo also has a clearly defined focus: it runs between the old marble quarries of Arzo and is accompanied by information panels about the quarries. This gives visitors a choice of different themes, from geological outcrops and industrial history to stone quarrying and hiking trails. Check the latest route information for any particular trail.

Vineyards and Tastings

The Mendrisiotto is associated with Merlot, vineyards and wine. Vineyard routes lead to tastings with producers in old cellars carved into the rock. As participating producers may change, check in advance which tastings are currently available. This allows you to plan this part of your stay specifically, without conflating it with cultural or geological excursions.
