Vairano offers three clear focal points for planning your trip: the Parco Botanico del Gambarogno, trails divided into several sections, and historic traces in the village. You can focus on botanical discoveries and views of the landscape, or devote more of your time to the hiking trails and architectural heritage. The differences between the options can help you choose the right focus for your stay.

Botany and views of the landscape

The Parco Botanico del Gambarogno is located in Vairano and covers more than 20,000 square metres. Its collections include around 950 different varieties of camellia. The park is also home to a citrus collection regarded as one of the most important in Europe, as well as other botanical rarities. The park offers panoramic views of Lake Maggiore, the Maggia Delta and the mountains beyond. This brings together two distinct aspects of the garden experience: the diversity of its plants and the views of the lake, delta and mountains.

Hiking trails in different stages

The Sentiero degli Oratori is just over 11 kilometres long and can be walked in either direction, in individual stages. From Vairano, the route initially follows the road; it then continues along a path above the Botanical Garden to Piazzogna. This leaves two separate choices to make when planning: whether to walk the full route or individual stages, and which direction to take.

The Tra monti e lago nature trail also offers sections with different characteristics. Along the Vairano–Contone section, educational information panels present the historical, cultural and ecological heritage, along with other distinctive features of the Gambarogno area. The San Nazzaro–Magadino stage climbs uphill to Vairano. The comparison can help you choose: one section focuses on the panels and their topics, while the other follows an uphill route to Vairano.

Oratories and local history

The present-day Oratorio di San Rocco is a 17th-century building on the site of an earlier medieval oratory. Casa Tosi has a viewpoint of medieval origin. Another cultural highlight is the Madonna del Rosario fresco depicting two saints. These places offer different points of interest: the Oratorio combines a 17th-century building with an older site, while Casa Tosi and the fresco reveal other aspects of the area’s historical and artistic heritage.

Political history also places Vairano in its historical context. The village was once an independent political municipality. In 1930, Vairano merged with Casenzano to form San Nazzaro; in 2010, San Nazzaro became part of the municipality of Gambarogno. Vairano lies at 392 metres above sea level, on a terrace 199 metres above the left bank of Lake Maggiore.

Getting your bearings for the journey

As a geographic reference point, Vairano is one kilometre south of San Nazzaro TI railway station, on the Cadenazzo–Luino railway line operated by Swiss Federal Railways. If you are considering travelling by train, check the current timetable for your specific travel date. When choosing accommodation, you can first decide whether to focus on the garden and its surroundings, a section of one of the trails, or the historic sites.
