Personico lies on the valley floor on the shaded side of the Leventina; the municipality also includes the side valleys of Val d’Ambra, Val Marcri and Val Nèdro. The village combines a distinctive local cultural heritage with two routes that take different approaches: the historic cultural route passes through Personico, while the Via GeoAlpina begins here. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the village’s history and the routes separately.

A village shaped by preservation

In the traditional village centre, one building houses a lever press that is among the cantonally significant cultural assets. The streetscape also bears the mark of history: several streets are cobbled, and the municipality aims to preserve them in their original state. An old fountain with a distinctive shape stands in the upper part of the village; it too is among the cantonally significant cultural assets. The press, street paving and fountain offer different ways to experience Personico’s history in its streetscape. At the same time, the village centre and upper part of the village are two distinct points of reference within the village.

Church, oratory and earlier village history

The church in Personico has a single-nave hall with three bays and a barrel vault. Its choir was built in the 16th century; in 1727, the entire building underwent extensive alterations. Inside, the church is decorated with frescoes dating from 1876, created by Stefano and Tommaso Calgari. The Oratory of San Rocco is located in the mountain hamlet of Faidal, at 912 m above sea level. It was built between the end of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century.

The village’s earlier history can also be placed in context: Personico was first mentioned in 1227 under its historical name, Prexonego. The village initially belonged to the parish of Biasca and became an independent parish before 1570. In the history of its administration, it first appears as part of the Vicinìa Basso (Giornico). In 1600, Personico, Bodio and Pollegio formed their own Vicinìa, which existed as a corporation until 1803. These details tell different chapters of the village’s history—from its earliest recorded name and ecclesiastical affiliation to a historical corporation shared with neighbouring communities.

Two routes, two perspectives

The historic cultural route in the Valle Leventina runs from Bodio via Personico, Faidal and Catto to Giornico. It includes two stone bridges dating from the 17th century. The route places Personico within a connection between several named places; the bridges add another perspective on the built heritage along the way.

The Via GeoAlpina has a different focus. It begins in Personico and leads to Cavergno in three stages, passing through Ticino’s natural landscapes. Along the way, the route explores the area’s geological, geomorphological and hydrological features, natural hazards and the use of stone. Here, natural processes and the use of stone take centre stage, while the historic cultural route brings together built and cultural heritage across a sequence of villages. Personico can be reached by bus from Biasca for the Via GeoAlpina. Check the timetable before you travel.

Glassworks and regional connections

The glassworks in Personico was established in the mid-18th century. Water, sand, quartz and wood from the valley were used to produce manufactured goods, which were then exported to Lombardy and German-speaking Switzerland. The use of local resources was thus linked to production and trade beyond the region. This part of the village’s history adds an economic perspective to the architectural and artistic history of the church.

Choosing Personico as a place to stay

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Personico, you can plan your stay around what interests you most: are you drawn to the village’s history and cultural assets, or would you like to include the starting point of the Via GeoAlpina in your plans? The historic cultural route passes through Personico and places the village on the route connecting Bodio to Giornico; the Via GeoAlpina is described as a three-stage route. You can weigh the local heritage and the routes as different reasons to choose this destination, without treating the two routes as the same tour.
