Weinfelden combines vineyards and rolling hills with cultural and leisure activities. The wine trail passes through three wine-growing areas, while the church, town hall square and theatre house reveal different chapters of local history. When looking for a hotel, you can shape your stay around nature, culture or water activities.

Vineyards, trails and local character

Weinfelden lies among gentle hills where the Thur Valley meets the Ottenberg. At the foot of the Ottenberg, vineyards meet well-kept countryside, floodplain forests and restored stream landscapes; the surrounding area is ideal for hiking and cycling. With around 4,530 ares of vineyard, wine-growing plays an important role here. The vineyards give the landscape a clear theme, without requiring your stay to focus solely on wine.

The Weinfelden Wine Trail begins and ends at the train station. The 9-kilometre route, with 240 metres of elevation gain, passes through the vineyards of Weinfelden, Boltshausen and Ottoberg; the stated walking time is 2 hours and 15 minutes. The distance, elevation gain and time provide concrete guidance for planning your day. Another hiking option featured among Weinfelden’s suggested routes is the Thur Trail from Weinfelden to Bischofszell.

The town itself is also easy to explore on foot. Weinfelden is also a junction on the SBB Zurich–Romanshorn line and the Thurbo regional railway. For trip planning, this means a compact town layout, convenient rail connections and a range of options for hiking and cycling all come together here.

Architectural history, politics and theatre

The Evangelical Church is a distinctive landmark for architecture enthusiasts. It was inaugurated on 10 March 1904 and, as a central-plan building with a cruciform layout and a crossing tower, combines angular Romanticism with the flowing, soft forms of early Art Nouveau. The church is legally protected and is listed in the ISOS as a protected individual element of building group 0.1 and as particularly valuable.

The town’s history goes back a long way: a five-metre-wide bridge over the Thur already stood in Weinfelden in 124 AD. It is interpreted as evidence of an important trading centre at the foot of the Ottenberg. In spring 1798, the Thurgau liberation movement began on Weinfelden’s town hall square. Two public assemblies in autumn 1830 helped bring about the adoption of a new Thurgau cantonal constitution. It established the direct election of representatives by the people and the principle of public access to government administration.

Another cultural venue is the Theaterhaus Thurgau: since 2008, the theagovia theater has used the building as its new performance venue. It is home to bĂĽhni wyfelde, Theater Bilitz and Theagovia. Together with the historic sites, they offer a cultural theme spanning architecture and political change through to theatre.

Baths, sports and local cuisine

There are two different bathing facilities for water activities. Thurbad has a 50-metre pool, a non-swimmer pool and a baby paddling pool with a spray park. The indoor pool has a 25-metre pool and two diving towers; swimming and aquafit classes are also offered there. Weinfelden’s sports facilities also include an ice rink, a curling rink and an indoor tennis court.

When planning meals, you can choose from restaurants serving local and international cuisine. A recurring seasonal feature of local life is Wyfelder Fritig: during the summer months, the town centre becomes a meeting place for everyone on the first Friday of each month, organised by businesses, shops, institutions, associations and venues in the town centre. The exact dates vary from year to year; if the event is important to your trip, check the dates for the relevant year.

The compact town layout and Weinfelden’s role as a rail hub offer further points to consider when planning your trip.
