Prehistoric pile-dwelling history at Lake Egelsee, industrial history at Greuterhof and the development of telecommunications at the Telephone Museum offer different ways to explore Gachnang’s cultural heritage. Gachnang Castle and the Bruder Klaus Church add to this range of themes. When planning your visit, it helps to decide first whether pile-dwelling history, the history of technology or architecture is your main interest; the sights are located in different parts of the municipality.

Gachnang and its localities

Gachnang is a political municipality and parish village in the Canton of Thurgau, in the Frauenfeld District. The municipality includes the localities of Gachnang, Islikon, Kefikon, Niederwil and Oberwil, as well as the hamlets of Strass, Bethelhausen and Rosenhuben. These names can help you find your way: the TELEPHONICA Telephone Museum and Greuterhof are in Islikon, while Gachnang Castle and the Gachnang Egelsee pile-dwelling settlement are other cultural and historical attractions in the municipality.

Pile dwellings at Lake Egelsee

Gachnang Egelsee is one of four selected pile-dwelling settlements in the Canton of Thurgau that have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” since 2011. This connects a specific site in Gachnang with a World Heritage property whose name itself highlights the prehistoric pile dwellings of the Alpine region. So if you are choosing a cultural focus, the history of pile dwellings is a natural option here.

Industry and telephony in Islikon

Greuterhof in Islikon was one of Switzerland’s first factories to achieve international prominence and is recognised as a national cultural monument. You can discover the history of the estate at nine on-site stops using QR codes, or from home through text, audio and images. If you plan to include the stops on site in your visit, check the latest information beforehand, as the arrangements may change.

Also in Islikon, the TELEPHONICA Telephone Museum traces the history of telecommunications from the talking drum to modern fibre-optic technology. The museum is organised into 34 themed exhibits. Guided tours let visitors experience historical technology in full working order. If this guided-tour experience is important to your plans, check the current offering in advance.

Gachnang Castle and Bruder Klaus Church

Gachnang Castle combines Baroque architecture and magnificent interiors with historical features such as a keep dating from the 13th century. Originally built as a moated castle, it was rebuilt by the monastery in 1767. It is used for weddings, celebrations, corporate events and exhibitions. If an exhibition or event is a deciding factor for your visit, check the dates for your travel period.

The Catholic Bruder Klaus Church was built in 1952 by Adolf and Paul Gaudy. It is also made available for concerts and performances. If you would like to include an event of this kind in your trip, check in advance whether one is scheduled during your travel period.

Hike between Islikon and Frauenfeld

Another way to spend your time here is to hike from Islikon railway station to Frauenfeld railway station. A route description published in 2016 gives the distance as 9.87 kilometres and the approximate duration as two and a half hours. This time estimate is a guide for planning your day, not an exact walking time. As the route and trail conditions can change, check the latest information before setting out.
