Aadorf is a village and political municipality in the Münchwilen district of the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland. Its historic centre is situated on the ridge of a terminal moraine formed by the Rhine Glacier. This brings local history together with a specific landform shaped by the Ice Age.

Local history and monastic buildings

Aadorf’s present-day Catholic church was built in 1865. The church in the Tänikon monastery complex dates from an earlier period: the 14th century. The complex also includes the abbess’s house and other surviving buildings from the monastery era. The monastery church is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the canton of Thurgau. The two churches thus offer different historical reference points: the present-day Catholic church, built in the 19th century, and the medieval Tänikon monastery church.

Finds from the surrounding area also provide evidence of different periods. These include Bronze Age finds, among them scattered dagger finds, Hallstatt-period flat graves, and individual finds from Roman times. The railway line that opened in 1855 was important to Aadorf’s later development. Another historic connection is the main road from Winterthur via Tuttwilerberg to Wil, which passes through Aadorf. The road and railway point to two different aspects of local history: the historic route and the development of the built-up area.

Leisure activities in different seasons

The activities at the Eisweiher vary with the season. In winter, people skate there; conditions depend on the weather. Outside winter, the Eisweiher offers a peaceful setting and an inviting barbecue area. Cross-country skiing is possible in the snow-prone Schauenberg area, although snow conditions vary. Anyone considering a weather-dependent winter activity can take these conditions into account when planning.

Other activities have a different focus. The Funbox skate park is right next to the sports fields and is open year-round. The Vita-Parcours starts by the swimming pool. Heidelberg outdoor swimming pool is located at Wittenwilerstrasse 51, 8355 Aadorf. The Spirit Parcours leads through seven stations in Guggenbüel in Aadorf. It is suitable for families who would like to follow the route together and talk along the way.

Hikes and themed trails

A variety of hikes run along the Lützelmurg. One specific route goes from Aadorf via Rüetschberg to Bichelsee, where the Lützelmurg rises. This links a hike to a named sequence of places. Those more interested in plants and forests will find a different focus on Aadorf’s forest educational trail, which provides information about plants and forest habitats.

A leisure map created specifically for Aadorf and the surrounding area includes descriptions of ten routes. It therefore offers several described routes for orientation, while the hike via Rüetschberg specifies a particular route. Along with the forest educational trail and other leisure activities, these routes offer different ways to explore Aadorf: through local and monastic history, seasonal activities, or trails focused on a particular aspect of nature.
