Discover Uzwil through its trails, river landscapes and architectural heritage: the 10-Village Trail passes through the municipalities of Uzwil and Oberuzwil, while the Thur and Glatt rivers shape the landscape along the way. Historic bridges, a grain store dating from 1619, art and the Friday market offer further ways to shape your trip.
Routes and landscapes
The 10-Village Trail runs around and partly through the ten villages in the municipalities of Uzwil and Oberuzwil. It consists of a main route and three shorter spur routes. When planning your tour, you can therefore first consider whether you would like to follow the main route or one of the shorter alternatives. The trail passes through the wild and romantic landscapes of the Thur and Glatt; along the way, Eppenberg offers views both nearby and into the distance.
The Vogelsberg area offers a different perspective on the landscape. This local recreation and leisure area is popular with joggers, cyclists and walkers. The Vita-Parcours fitness trail is located in Vogelsberg Forest, where you can discover towering Douglas firs in various spots. The options thus include both the route of the 10-Village Trail and a forest used for a range of leisure activities.
The Uze also shapes the local landscape: in Uzwil and Niederuzwil, extensive work has restored it to a more natural state, enhancing the built-up area. The Thur Route passes through Uzwil and offers a view of the Thur river landscape. It consists of three stages that are well suited to day trips. The second stage is 53 kilometres long and runs from Bischofszell via Uzwil and BĂĽtschwil to Nesslau. The Thur accompanies the route throughout, shaping the landscape.
The Thur, viewpoints and bridges
You can discover the Thur waterfall at Felsegg along the Henau–Brübach route. The Thur Bridge, also known as the Brübach Bridge, offers a direct view of the spray. The Thur’s undercut bank at Gigerrain was formed by the river’s ongoing erosion. For the best view of the undercut bank, leave the Henau–Zuzwil route towards Gillhof.
Uzwil’s bridge engineering can also be seen in specific examples. The Maillart Bridge was built in 1933/34 as part of the then state road, a concrete road; Robert Maillart was its builder. The Felsegg Thur Bridge is a three-hinged arch bridge with an arch span of 72 metres. Each structure offers its own reason to explore the connection between the river landscape and infrastructure in the region.
Architectural heritage and art
The Niederuzwil grain store is a two-storey log building. An inscription dates its construction to 1619; in the 1980s it was restored and moved to its current location. The dates mark different stages in its history: 1619 for its construction, and the 1980s for its restoration and relocation. In Henau, the church tower is considered the oldest monument in the municipality of Uzwil and is protected at federal level. The Villa WaldbĂĽhl in Uzwil is listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National Significance.
The Galerie am Gleis adds contemporary art to the mix. It gives artists the opportunity to present their work to the public and is committed to shaping public spaces through art. The cultural offering thus spans historic buildings and monuments as well as art that engages with public spaces.
Genussmarkt and sport
Uzwil’s weekly Genussmarkt takes place every Friday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at Lindenring in the centre of Uzwil. It offers fresh local produce, and visitors can also meet the people behind the market stalls. The market thus combines a regular morning event with regional products and personal encounters.
Boccia and curling are also part of the local sports offering. In Uzwil, boccia is played both for fun and competitively. The Boccia Club Uzwil’s boccia hall has two lanes. Curling is also played here; the Curling Club Uzwil’s sz immo curling hall in Uzwil has four rinks.
