Niederbüren is a rural municipality on the Thur and has preserved a picturesque hilly landscape. The combination of local history, specialist museums and outdoor activities shapes the choice of destination: you can explore church art, music and textile history as well as the beaver trail or the amusement park. The Thur and the natural surroundings invite you to go for walks and relax. The range of attractions allows you to plan your stay around cultural interests, leisure activities or getting outdoors.

Church, music and local history

St. Michael’s Church is a Rococo church dating from 1761/63. It is known for its magnificent altar in stucco marble and its stuccowork. A church guide with detailed descriptions and images is available from the parish office; ask about its availability before your visit. Explanations of the furnishings can add to your appreciation of the church.

The history of the village is documented in writing from an early date: Niederbüren was first mentioned in 737, under the name “Gaulichsbüren,” in a deed of donation to the Abbey of St. Gallen. Architectural traces are also part of its history. The remains of the walls mark the site of Lindenberg Castle, while the historic courthouse from the 18th century has been preserved as the “Zur alten Herberge” country inn. The documentary record, remains of the walls and courthouse offer different ways to explore the village’s history.

Music and textile history

The Rock & Pop Museum Niederbüren is Switzerland’s first rock and pop museum. It traces the development of popular music from its beginnings in the early 20th century through the 2000s. Guided tours share stories about music history, artists, bands and individual songs. The historical overview is complemented by specific topics from the world of music.

The Sorntal Textile Museum offers a different perspective on industrial and craft history. It is housed in a former textile factory building dating from 1850. On display are working textile machines from the beginnings of industrialisation through to more recent times. The museum also exhibits wooden tools used in the cottage industry, including handlooms and Jacquard looms. Comparing the textile machines with the tools used in the cottage industry offers two different ways to explore textile work.

Amusement park and nature on the Thur

Niederbüren Amusement Park offers over 6,000 m² of games, sports and fun for all ages. The Abentüürwält features an 11-metre-high, Western-style slide tower with four different slides. The mini-golf course is also part of the attractions: its size meets national regulations, making it suitable for competitions. Games, sports, slides and mini-golf offer a range of activities in the amusement park. The “Niederbüren, Freizeitpark” stop is right beside the park and provides a convenient landmark for planning your visit.

Those interested in wildlife and its habitat can explore the Thur through the WWF Beaver Trail. The trail runs between Oberbüren and Niederbüren; at ten stations, you can learn more about the beaver, Europe’s largest rodent, and its habitat. The stations invite you to explore the natural surroundings rather than focusing on an exhibition.

Another option is the Schwarzenbach–Thurauen–Niederbüren hiking route. It is described as a moderately difficult, 14.9-kilometre hike along the Thur from Schwarzenbach to Niederbüren. The two options differ in focus: the beaver trail centres on ten information stations, while the hiking route is described in terms of its length and difficulty. Since trail conditions may change, check the latest route information before setting out.
