Hoffeld combines a distinctive village character with views across a landscape shaped by forests, meadows and pastures. The agricultural street village and its regionally typical wooden buildings give the place a distinctive architectural character. The journey there can also be planned with specific connections in mind: Hoffeld is accessible by postbus from Degersheim or St. Peterzell, and the SOB railway station in Degersheim is nearby. This means you can consider the village’s character and its transport links separately when planning your trip.

Street village and wooden architecture

Hoffeld is a true street village. The term describes a settlement pattern in which houses are arranged along a road. In Hoffeld, the rural appearance of this agricultural village has been preserved. A number of intact, regionally typical wooden gabled buildings shape the village’s appearance. Hoffeld is also listed in the municipality of Neckertal’s protected townscape area. The settlement pattern, traditional timber construction and preserved rural appearance each offer a different way to understand the village’s architectural character.

Meadows, pastures and sweeping views

Meadows and pastures bordered by woodland shape the area around Hoffeld. From there, the view stretches across the valley cut to the horizon above the wooded slope opposite. Open land defines the nearby scenery, while the view extends beyond the slope on the other side. The ChrĂĽz viewpoint is easily reached via Hoffeld or Wolfensberg. With a little luck, you may spot chamois there.

For geographical context at the municipal level: the Necker flows through the entire municipality of Neckertal. The Aachbach Valley is a side valley of the Necker and extends uphill as far as Degersheim. These valley and river connections add context to the landscape around Neckertal, while the view from Hoffeld itself stretches across the valley cut to the wooded slope opposite.

Getting there and finding your way around the region

Hoffeld is closely oriented towards Degersheim. The village is accessible by postbus from both Degersheim and St. Peterzell, and the SOB railway station in Degersheim is nearby. A road connects Degersheim and Hoffeld with Ganterschwil and Brunnadern. When planning your journey, check the postbus service and train timetable for your travel date.

Trails in Neckertal and the surrounding region

The Neckertal Border Trail is one of the leisure and tourism offerings in the municipality of Neckertal. The Neckertal Cultural Trails comprise seven circular routes with more than 100 information boards in total. The Necki Trail passes the road connecting Neckertal and Hoffeld. The region therefore offers different types of trail connections: an offering at the municipal level, a network of circular routes with information boards, and a route that passes the road towards Hoffeld.

Two more trails meet in St. Peterzell: the Vorarlberg-Appenzell Trail from Rankweil via St. Peterzell to Einsiedeln, and the St. Gallen Trail, also known as Via Jacobi No. 4, from Rorschach via St. Peterzell to Einsiedeln. The two trails share the section from St. Peterzell to Einsiedeln, but have different stated starting points: Rankweil for the Vorarlberg-Appenzell Trail and Rorschach for the St. Gallen Trail, also known as Via Jacobi.

The Toggenburg region offers walking paths, scenic high-altitude routes, biking and trail-running routes, as well as winter walks and snowshoe trails. The selection ranges from strolls and high-altitude tours to cycling and winter activities. When planning your trip, you can combine this regional variety with Hoffeld’s distinctive village character and the views described here, while keeping the different trail connections distinct.
