The Taa multi-purpose building dates back to 1798 and is a farmstead comprising a farmhouse, barn, weaving cellar and embroidery room. Its layout brings together living, farming and textile work. Brunnadern is a district of the municipality of Neckertal in the canton of St. Gallen. Historic buildings, a cultural landscape and various hiking options give your stay different focal points.
Historic buildings and townscape
Brunnadern has a protected townscape. The Protestant church was built in 1763 by H. U. Grubenmann and is protected as a monument at federal level. The Vorstadel house dates back even further: it originated in the 16th century, was extended in the 17th century and is a Protestant pilgrims’ hostel on the Way of St. James. The Grosshaus, the municipality’s largest old residence, stands at the south portal.
The covered Tös wooden bridge is another striking building: it was built in 1784 and is the oldest surviving covered wooden bridge over the Necker. Bruggekino is held on the Tös bridge every August. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the specific event dates in advance.
Cultural landscape and the Necker
Furth is a protected cultural landscape area. The Furth–Spreitenbach cultural landscape is a scattered settlement with impressive farmhouses and traditionally farmed land. Here, the focus is on the settlement pattern and land use; Brunnadern’s protected buildings offer a different emphasis.
In the hamlet of Furt, between Brunnadern and St. Peterzell, the Necker forms a calm, relatively deep pool below a rocky ledge. A small sunbathing lawn lies on the bank. The Pärkli on the Necker is close to the village and can be reached on foot from the railway station in just a few minutes.
Hikes and route choices
The Brunnadern Cultural Trail is an easy hiking route with a walking time of 3.5 to 4 hours; it can be shortened. The route runs from Brunnadern via Spreitenbach, Unterreitenberg, Schwendi and Furt, returning to Brunnadern. The time estimate helps you plan the loop as a longer activity, while the option to shorten it leaves room for flexibility in your day’s plans.
The “Säntisblick über dem Neckertal” hike offers a different finishing point: it ends by descending to Brunnadern railway station. Unlike the Cultural Trail loop, which returns to Brunnadern, this hike ends at the station. If you consider the endpoint when choosing a route, you can distinguish between these two itineraries.
The “Neckiweg Abschnitt Brunnadern-Oberhelfenschwil” is a themed trail. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
Getting there by train
Brunnadern can be reached by train from Uznach, St. Gallen or Schaffhausen. Check the timetables for your travel date. From the station, it is just a few minutes’ walk to the Pärkli on the Necker. This makes the short walk to the riverbank an easy activity to plan, while the Cultural Trail takes several hours to hike.
