Hiking trails with different highlights
The Chnobelweg Bächli leads across meadows, past farms and through the forest. It is suitable for an outing with family or friends; one section is also accessible in winter, although snow and trail conditions play a role.
A moderately difficult hike starts in the village of Bächli heading towards Harzenmoos and passes through Ettenberg, Chräloch–Chapf, Oberchapf, Chapf and Santmaregg. You can then return to Bächli or continue hiking towards Urnäsch. The hike towards Harzenmoos is moderately difficult; the Chnobelweg has a different focus, shaped by the landscape and the recommendation for families or friends.
Another hike leads from Bächli through the Neckertal to the Hochalp in Urnäsch, following a ridge with scenic views. The Neckiweg focuses on a story: five mythical creatures that call the Neckertal home feature on six routes. The Necki trails are family-friendly hiking trails with barbecue areas.
The area around Hemberg has easy trails for hiking and biking; in winter, options include winter hiking trails and snowshoe tours. Winter activities depend on snow and trail conditions.
Village culture and cuisine
In the village of Bächli (Hemberg), Restaurant Rössli serves menus made mostly with seasonal produce, preferably sourced from the region. As menus and sourcing may change, check the current offering before your visit.
As of 1 January 2026, the Red House in Bächli is listed in the Canton of St. Gallen’s list of cultural property under protection. Silvesterchlausen is celebrated in Bächli and the surrounding area. If you are planning a trip specifically for this, check the local dates and ask whether visitors are able to take part.
Accommodation and getting there
The Frohwies inn and guesthouse are located in a house more than 500 years old, on a sunny hilltop between Bächli and St. Peterzell. If you would like to stay there, take its location between the two villages into account when planning your routes, and check availability for your travel dates.
From St. Gallen and Wil, you can reach Bächli by SBB train via Wattwil, then take the PostBus to Hemberg and, after changing buses, continue by PostBus to Bächli. Before setting off, check the current SBB and PostBus connections and allow for the transfer in Hemberg.
Winter activities
At the Hemberg ski lift, the platter lift is suitable for families and beginners. A magic carpet is used for skiing, snowboarding and sledging. Operations are seasonal and depend on snow conditions and the operating calendar.
A 2025 brochure about the Hemberg-Bächli region lists guided snowshoe tours with outdoor fondue in Bächli. Check dates and availability beforehand before including this seasonal activity in your travel plans.
