A challenging section of the Eschenbach Border Trail begins in Hintergoldingen; along the way, you’ll also find an information board about the history of the Gold Mine on Dägelsberg. Other attractions include a chapel with a distinctive local history, cycling routes and seasonal activities at Atzmännig. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can tailor your plans to these varied activities.

Hintergoldingen and its routes

Hintergoldingen is a village district in the Goldingertal. After passing through the village districts of Vorhalden and Vordersagen, you reach it after a short, steep climb. Several narrow roads branch off Hintergoldingerstrasse into the side valleys of Juch/Sack, Au/Studenweid and Töbeli. The place names help you find your bearings in this varied landscape. Hintergoldingen is also located on the access road to the Atzmännig sports and leisure centre.

To get there by bus, take route 630 from the Eschenbacher Dorftreff to the Hintergoldingen (Sonne) stop. Check the current operating times before you travel.

Hiking to the Gold Mine

Stage 4 of the Eschenbach Border Trail begins in Hintergoldingen and initially follows the road towards Atzmännig. It is rated as a difficult hiking stage: the route is 14.8 kilometres long, with 800 metres of ascent and 716 metres of descent. This gives you an idea of the tour’s scope before you add it to your plans. Check the route details before setting off.

Along the way, the stage passes an information board about the history of the Gold Mine on Dägelsberg. At the Gold Mine itself, a tunnel and a deep shaft remain from historical attempts to mine gold. The information board and the surviving traces each tell a different part of the local story. Check access conditions at the Gold Mine locally.

Cycling routes with different itineraries

The cycling and moped tour “Gold Trophy on the Road – Goldingertal Cycling and Moped Route” runs from Atzmännig via Hintergoldingen, Goldingen, Hintermüli and Rüeterswil, then back to Atzmännig. The tour includes nine golden game boxes; another nine are spread from Goldingen via Egligen to Neuhaus. The game boxes may change.

The “Golden Flower Tour” cycle route follows a different itinerary: it runs from Laupen via Hintergoldingen to Rüeterswil. Atzmännig is the starting and finishing point of the Gold Trophy loop described here; the Flower Tour, by contrast, connects Laupen, Hintergoldingen and Rüeterswil in that order. Check the route details before setting off.

The Brother Klaus Chapel

The history of the Brother Klaus Chapel is linked to access to church services: Pastor Johann Winiger supported its construction to make it easier for the farmers of Hintergoldingen, and especially the schoolchildren, to attend services. The chapel was consecrated in 1953. Today, it is mainly used as a wedding chapel. If you’re planning to hold a specific celebration there, make the necessary arrangements in advance.

Seasonal activities at Atzmännig

Atzmännig’s summer activities include a chairlift, an amusement park, a toboggan run, a bungee trampoline, the Spatz Männi adventure trail and a ropes course. These activities are seasonal, and the availability of individual facilities may vary. So check which activities are available on your chosen date before you visit.

The 2025/26 winter brochure describes the larger ski area, which has a chairlift and the Atzmännig ski lift. Both take you up to 1,200 metres above sea level and offer six different downhill runs. The brochure also mentions a 1.9-kilometre winter toboggan run from the mountain station to the chairlift’s valley station; sledges and bobsleds are listed for hire.

Hintergoldingen play area

The Hintergoldingen play area is described as accessible and has a fire pit, a picnic area and a sand play area. Two large goals and a barrier on the road side also make it suitable for football. The play area offers a different kind of visit from the Border Trail stage or cycling routes. Check the condition of the facilities before visiting.
