Biberist is a political municipality in the Wasseramt district of the canton of Solothurn, Switzerland. There are three distinct areas to focus on during a stay: hikes along the Emme, the Altisberg area with its Vita Parcours fitness trail and early settlement history, and cultural sites. The settlement pattern is also useful for orientation: Biberist’s built-up area is continuously connected to that of Gerlafingen; the northernmost neighbourhoods border directly on the built-up areas of Solothurn and Zuchwil. The Buurelade adds regional food products to the mix. First consider whether outdoor activities, cultural history or a combination of the two will shape your stay.
Hiking along the Emme
The Biber Bierwanderung combines a hike of around 9 km along the Emme with specialty beers brewed by local breweries. The approximate distance provides a guide to the hiking portion; the specialty beers combine exercise with local beer. Event dates and participating breweries may change. Check the latest event dates and participating breweries before planning your trip.
Biberist is a destination or rest stop on both Emme hikes. These hikes can be shortened using public transport; from Biberist, you can take the bus to Solothurn railway station. Biberist has three bus routes and two railway lines. As network details may change due to future timetable or service changes, check the latest connections before travelling. This distinction is a useful planning point: the Biber Bierwanderung combines an approximate stated route length with brewery specialties, while the two Emme hikes can be shortened using public transport.
Altisberg between activity and history
The Altisberg area is home to the Vita Parcours fitness trail; its exact route may change. Check the current route before planning your visit. The first settlement on Altisberg was established in the Neolithic period. The earliest evidence of human presence in the municipality of Biberist is also found there. The trail represents a present-day opportunity for exercise, while the settlement history belongs to a much earlier period in the municipality’s past. Chriziweier is an important local recreation area.
Cultural history and churches
Today, the Vorder-Bleichenberg manor house is a cultural and meeting centre for all generations. It originally served as a stately summer residence for the Solothurn patrician Von Roll family. Hieronymus von Roll and his son Johann II built the baroque Türmlihaus between 1607 and 1609. Its transition from a summer residence to today’s cultural and meeting centre links its architectural history with a contemporary cultural role.
The Catholic church in Biberist is the oldest church in Wasseramt; the new church was built in 1845–1846. The Thomaskirche was built in 1910 on the boundary between the villages of Biberist and Gerlafingen. Its notable stained-glass windows are by Burkhard Mangold and Rudolf Münger. The windows can be viewed by arrangement with the parish. The churches thus differ both in their construction dates and in the Thomaskirche’s stained-glass windows as an artistic feature.
Regional produce
The Buurelade Biberist sells a wide range of regionally produced food, as well as products grown or made in-house, including various types of pasta. Anyone wishing to include regional food in their travel plans will find a specific place to visit here, alongside the hiking and cultural attractions.
