In Erlinsbach, you can focus your stay on the landscape, hiking routes or architectural history. The municipality lies at an elevation of about 400 m above sea level and has around 3,600 residents. Recreational areas include the foothills of the Jura heights, the Aare riverside recreation area and the forests around Erlinsbach. Hiking, fishing, canoeing and cycling are among the outdoor activities in this setting. You can choose to focus on the forest, the Aare or getting around by bike.
Landscape and Walks
The municipal Birch-Brunnacker nature reserve is located in Erlinsbach SO and is a nationally significant amphibian spawning site. There is a walking path and benches where visitors can relax. If you are planning a walk rather than a longer hike, you will find a path and places to sit there. The nature reserve offers a different focus from the longer routes: the emphasis here is on the protected area and a path for walking.
Hiking Trails for Different Timeframes
Route 4 can be started at the car park by the Gugen quarry or at the forest entrance near the OE model airfield. From Barmelhof, it leads through the forest via Breitmis, following the Erzbach. The municipal hiking leaflet, in its April 2022 edition, gives the route as 12 km, around 3.5 hours, and approximately 300 metres of ascent and descent. Check the current route information before setting off, as the route and figures may change.
Route 3 follows the Panoramaweg towards Erlinsbach through the forest. The leaflet lists this route as 6 km, with a stated duration of 2 hours and approximately 220 metres of ascent and descent each. By comparison, Route 3 is half the distance of Route 4 and has a shorter stated duration. For elevation gain and loss, the leaflet lists approximately 220 metres for Route 3 and around 300 metres for Route 4. You can take distance, estimated time and elevation into account together when planning your hike.
Chapel, Stream and Architectural History
St. Lawrence's Chapel in Erlinsbach was built in 1697 and originally served as the parish church for Obererlinsbach. For a long time, the Erzbach beside the chapel formed the boundary between the Catholic and Reformed populations. The chapel and stream therefore represent two connected aspects of local history: the building's religious function and the former denominational division.
Another historical feature is the former smithy in Niedererlinsbach. It is an impressive late Gothic building with a hipped roof. It dates back to the 15th century, while its present-day appearance largely reflects the period around 1600. The Cäsar-von-Arx-Haus was also built in 1830 as a simple farmhouse. Together, these buildings illustrate different chapters of Erlinsbach's history, from the older smithy to a 19th-century farmhouse.
More Leisure Activities
If you would like to include a range of activities in your plans, there are also options beyond the hiking trails. The neighbouring municipality of Stüsslingen is home to Heidental Golf Course, with an 18-hole course and a driving range. Outdoor swimming pools in Aarau and Schönenwerd are easily reachable from Erlinsbach by bicycle in 15 minutes.
After getting active, you can enjoy a meal at one of Erlinsbach's many restaurants. This lets you choose your stay based on the activities that matter to you: hiking and nature, architectural history or other leisure options in the area.
