Wilchingen is known as a wine-growing municipality in the Canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Its largely preserved villagescape, historic buildings and architecture offer an insight into traditional Swiss life. There are also wine-related activities, routes through the surrounding area and opportunities to observe nature. There are several themes to choose from for a discovery trip: local history and church architecture, a look at the work of a winery, a hike to the ruins of Radegg, or observing the fauna and flora of the Wangental valley.
Local History and Church Architecture
The Wilchingen Local History Museum displays objects relating to local history, a collection of paintings and three rooms dedicated to poets. Its collections and rooms offer different ways to explore the village: through its history, painting and literature. Visitors interested in Wilchingen’s cultural side will find an insight into local themes alongside its historic architecture.
St. Othmar’s Church is situated above the village. It was built in 1676 incorporating an older tower dating from the 15th century. Its construction history therefore combines a 17th-century church building with an older structure. St. Othmar is considered the first transverse church in German-speaking Switzerland and served as a model for the Reformed parish church in Zurzach. For architecture enthusiasts, the building’s history is linked to its significance for church architecture.
Discover Wine at the Rötiberg Winery
The Rötiberg Winery in Wilchingen offers several ways to explore wine and the art of winemaking. Wine tastings cover wine styles, the diversity of wine grapes, food and wine pairing, and stories from the world of winemaking. A guided tour takes visitors through the production and storage rooms, the historic vaulted cellar and the wine archive, with wine tastings along the way.
Those who would like to create their own blend can use a selection of wines to compose a wine of their own in a workshop. The bottle is corked and labelled that same day and can be taken home. Each activity has a different focus: the tasting provides information about wine, the tour offers a look inside the winery, and the workshop lets you create something to take home.
Hike to the Ruins of Radegg
The ruins of Radegg are freely accessible, suitable for children and have a picnic area. The hiking trail begins at Wilchingen-Hallau railway station, passes through the outlying district of Unterneuhaus and reaches the ruins via the area around the mountain church, Stuel, Haartel and Rossberghof restaurant. The route combines a historic destination with several named landmarks. As trail conditions can change locally, check them before setting out.
Vineyards, Cycling Routes and Nature Watching
There is a network of hiking and cycling routes in and around Wilchingen. One specific cycling route is the Klettgau Wine Route (SchweizMobil 751), which runs through the vineyards around Wilchingen. Extensive vineyards can also be found in the surrounding area, which is considered scenically attractive. Those who want to explore the landscape by bike can focus on the wine route, while the hiking trails offer further opportunities to explore on foot.
At the “Wangental Natur Pur” biotope, a boardwalk and two observation huts provide opportunities to quietly observe the diverse fauna and flora. The Wangental valley forms a transition between the Rhine and the Klettgau. These offer complementary nature experiences: the vineyards are the focus along the wine route, while the biotope invites visitors to observe plants and animals.
