Would you like to centre your visit on an annual event, discover local history, or plan a route? These priorities lead to different travel decisions. The autumn festival gives visitors an insight into life in the Klettgau.

The October autumn festival

The traditional Gächlingen Autumn Festival takes place every year on the first Sunday in October. The exact date and programme change from year to year; the theme also varies each time and runs throughout the village exhibitions. If you are planning your visit around the festival, check the date and programme for the year you wish to attend.

Regional products made by the exhibitors themselves are part of the festival. Festival restaurants at various locations and traditional brass band music invite visitors to linger. As individual vendors and programme items may vary, checking the annual programme is particularly helpful if you want to experience specific exhibitions or offerings.

Church and archaeological finds

Gächlingen’s church shapes the village skyline with its tall tower and was inaugurated in 1845. It features large windows in vivid colours, designed by Franco Giacomel. Since 1976/78, they have been a distinctive focal point.

Archaeological finds offer another perspective on the history of the area. At the Gächlingen-Goldäcker site, pottery fragments from the Neolithic La Hoguette culture were discovered, dating to approximately 5300–5000 BC. More than 100 features from the Early and Middle Neolithic periods were also documented during the Goldäcker excavation. Roman pottery was found at Gächlingen-Chüetel, while the remains of a Roman brickworks were discovered at Näppental. Together, these archaeological traces span the Neolithic period through to Roman times.

Circular walk and getting there

The circular walk starts at the church in Gächlingen, passes through the Klettgau vineyards and small vineyard huts, and continues to St. Moritz Church on the Hallauer Berg. If you are planning this route, take current trail conditions into account. The circular walk is accessible from the Gächlingen Dorf bus stop.

From Schaffhausen, travel by train and change to a bus in Neunkirch. Check the current timetable before setting off, as public transport connections may change. This allows you to plan your journey and walk separately, without confusing the timetable check with an assessment of trail conditions.

Carriage ride and views across the Klettgau

Kutschen Fahrten Vogelsanger offers a small carriage with a sun canopy for four people, also suitable for longer tours. A large, comfortable, heated wagonette is available for eight people. Rides with breakfast or brunch are also offered. Carriage rides should be arranged in advance.

Another named spot, the Gälefritz barbecue area, offers wide-ranging views across the Klettgau.
