Dallenwil offers a range of day-trip destinations: the Aawasser Trail starts near the train station, while cable cars lead to Wirzweli and Wiesenberg. You can plan river trails, mountain hikes and seasonal winter activities separately for your stay. Which of these sides you focus on also influences how you plan your days.

Getting There and Trails on the Valley Floor

The Luftseilbahn Dallenwil–Wirzweli group cable car takes around 10 minutes from Dallenwil to Wirzweli and can carry 44 people. From Dallenwil train station, you can reach its valley station by free shuttle bus or on foot in 15 minutes. Shuttle availability depends on the cable car’s operating hours; schedules may also vary, so it is worth checking the latest connections before setting off.

A second connection leads to Wiesenberg: the 4-person cable car takes around 10 minutes. Its valley station is in the middle of the village, about 100 metres from the train station. This means the two cable car connections differ from the outset: for Wirzweli, you can choose between a shuttle and a walk to the valley station, while the valley station for Wiesenberg is close to the train station.

For a route without a mountain cable car, the family-friendly Aawasser Trail is a good option. It starts just beyond Dallenwil train station and follows the Engelberger Aa to Oberdorf. The wide trail is lined with bushes, trees and places to sit and is open year-round; however, weather and high water can affect access. If you would rather cycle, there is a relaxed family ride along the Engelberger Aa. It runs from Grafenort via Wolfenschiessen to Dallenwil and is possible year-round.

Themed Trails and Activities on Wirzweli

Wirzweli has two themed trails: the Weather Witch Trail and the Witch Trail. The Weather Witch Trail is about 4.2 kilometres long and takes around one and a half to two hours. The route crosses meadows and passes through deep forests; along the way, there are witch-themed stations and barbecue areas. It is suitable for children aged four and over. Trail conditions and facilities can vary, so plan according to the conditions on site.

The Wirzweli Witch Playground is also designed for families. This large playground is located at an altitude of over 1,200 metres and can be reached by cable car or on foot. Its facilities may be maintained seasonally. The Wirzweli Archery Park offers a different activity: in a natural setting, it has courses for beginners and experienced archers. Rental equipment is not available on site.

Winter Days: Snowshoeing, Skiing and Sledging

In winter, Wirzweli has around 36 kilometres of marked, avalanche-safe snowshoeing routes through unspoilt nature. Route availability depends on snow and safety conditions. This is an important caveat for planning: the stated total length describes a network of routes, not necessarily a single tour.

The Wirzweli ski area is in the municipality of Dallenwil. Continuing to operate the ski lifts helps preserve them for children and adults. The Eggwald ski lift is 550 metres long and surrounded by blue runs. The slope has a moderate gradient; beginners in particular use the lower section as a practice area. The children’s tow lift is located right beside it: a rope lift without a bar, with a practice slope for first attempts on skis.

If you prefer sledging, you can plan a run on the 4.5-kilometre sledging run from Gummenalp to Wirzweli. The ride takes about 40 to 60 minutes. Sled rental and piste operations are seasonal, so check both before your winter day out.

Chapels, Yodelling and Regional Cheese-Making Traditions

The Wirzweli mountain chapel was officially consecrated on 14 September 1980. It offers hikers and other visitors a place to pause; services are occasionally held there, sometimes accompanied by music and yodelling. The yodelling service with the Wiesenberg Yodel Club takes place in the chapel every year on the last Sunday in July. The ecumenical Midsummer celebration is also held annually, in June: women who arrange flowers make flower crowns together with children. If you would like to attend one of these celebrations, check the dates for your trip.

The Church of St. Lawrence also tells part of Dallenwil’s history. It was built in 1699, enlarged to its present size in 1903 and made an independent parish in 1923. The Wiesenberg Yodel Club was founded in Wiesenberg—another local connection to the yodelling tradition heard at the service on Wirzweli.

The Alpengold Wirzweli circular trail starts and ends in Dallenwil. It links alpine meadows, traditional cheese dairies and the Alpsbrinz tradition. The Huismatt cheese dairy is along the trail: you can sample local cheeses in the farm shop, and tours of the cheese dairy and cowshed can be arranged. Arrange a visit or tour with the dairy in advance so it fits your travel day.

Hikes from Wiesenberg and along the Ridge

Wiesenberg is the starting point for various hikes, including one to Stanserhorn and a circular hike to Wirzweli. The hike between Wiesenberg and Wirzweli is also suitable for pushchairs; trail conditions may change seasonally. This lets you choose a hike to suit your preferred mode of travel, without confusing the walk with the cable car ride.

The ridge hike “The Ridge Southwards” leads from Stanserhorn via Ächerli, Arvigrat and Gummen at Wirzweli to Dallenwil. Along the way, it offers views in every direction of Lake Lucerne, Brünig Pass and the Engelberg Valley. At an altitude of 1,450 metres, the highly visible wooden Holzwang Chapel stands at Chänzeli, on the foothills of Chli Horn on Stanserhorn and at the cantonal border with Obwalden. The different routes and destinations give you concrete reference points for planning a hiking day around the places you would like to see along the way.
