From Stans railway station, you can reach the valley station of the Stanserhorn Railway in a five-minute walk. The journey begins with the nostalgic 1893 funicular; at the Kälti intermediate station, you transfer to the CabriO aerial cableway. Walking time to the valley station may vary slightly depending on the route. If you are planning your journey for a specific day, it is best to check the current timetable.
Hikes between the village and the summit
For a circular walk with a stated duration, the signposted “Around Stans” hike is a good option: it takes two hours, passes through neighbourhoods and attractive farmhouses, and leads to the Hueblimatt viewpoint. The route combines impressions of the village with a destination beyond its neighbourhoods; details may vary slightly due to maintenance or local conditions.
Another hiking route climbs from the village centre to Stanserhorn. Along the way are the Maria zum Schnee chapel, the Kälti intermediate station, the Ahornhütte mountain hut, Alp Blatti and Rinderalp. The main difference between the two routes is their destination: the “Around Stans” loop leads to Hueblimatt, while the other route goes to Stanserhorn. The summit trail also includes a protected area for plants. Every day, a volunteer Stanserhorn ranger walks between the revolving restaurant and the summit, sharing their knowledge with visitors. If this service is important to your plans, check the latest information.
Stans lies between Buochserhorn and Stanserhorn, with views of the Alpine landscape from the village. This adds a scenic perspective to the hiking options without requiring you to choose a route to the summit.
Village history and architecture
The Church of St. Peter and Paul was built between 1641 and 1647 in the Early Baroque style. Its Romanesque bell tower dates from around 1200, making it considerably older than the church building. These two dates create a striking contrast in time: a medieval tower and a 17th-century church stand side by side.
Another protected building is the Salzmagazin. Built in the early 18th century, it is a listed monument. Anyone interested in Stans’s architectural history can look beyond the parish church to a building from a later period.
Art and stories from Stans
The Winkelriedhaus is one of three houses belonging to the Nidwalden Museum in Stans. A permanent exhibition introduces visitors to the region’s art history through works from the collection. In the house’s garden, the pavilion hosts three temporary exhibitions each year featuring artists with a connection to Nidwalden or whose work is of interest to the region. The programme changes, so check which exhibition is currently on view before visiting.
A themed village tour also explores the stories of notable women from Stans. It focuses on confident, courageous and creative women who helped shape life in the main town of Nidwalden. You can also combine a walk through the village centre with visits to the village square and its fountain, Hölfi and the parish church. These sights reflect the traditional character of a typical Swiss village.
Culinary heritage and village life
The CULINARIUM ALPINUM, a centre for the culinary heritage of the Alps, is located in the former Capuchin monastery in Stans. Its offerings include courses, seminars, products, recipes and dining centred on this theme. It works primarily with authentic, unadulterated regional products from Central Switzerland. The different formats offer various ways to explore the subject: you can discover recipes and products or learn about the culinary heritage through the dining experience. Specific programmes may change.
The annual Älperchilbi in Stans is part of village life and attracts several thousand visitors. If you would like to include the event in your stay, check the dates and programme details in advance.
