High above Wolhusen are the remains of the Outer Castle. Together with a mortuary chapel, a historic mill and various leisure activities, the town offers several ways to enjoy a stay combining history and active recreation.

Castle and Historic Traces

Wolhusen Castle and its grounds are open to the public. It is located on a signposted circular hiking trail to historically significant sites in the surrounding area, which begins at Wolhusen railway station. An open tower room and an information panel stand on the stump of the former keep. The Outer Castle was once the largest fortress-style castle complex in the canton of Lucerne; today, only sections of the walls remain.

Another historical trace leads to Wolhusen’s mortuary chapel. Built in 1661, it houses a Danse Macabre featuring real human skulls, described as the most interesting Danse Macabre in the landscape of Central Switzerland. The chapel was placed under federal protection in 1956 and added to the cantonal register of monuments in 1965.

Mill History and Culture

The Fontannen Mill near Wolhusen has been documented since 1584. The current mill building bears the date 1663 and was ceremonially inaugurated in 2002 after careful restoration. Visits are possible by appointment. Please reconfirm the date before you travel.

The Wolhuser Forum for History offers village tours led by board members and organizes exhibitions. Some of the events organized by the Forum are open to the public; dates and programmes vary. The KKLW cultural and communications venue also provides a regular cultural highlight: each year, it hosts six to eight events featuring cabaret and other performing arts, music, dance, theatre or art exhibitions. If a particular type of event is important to your trip, check the event dates.

Please note the current status of the Tropenhaus Wolhusen: as of 26 August 2026, it is rented out exclusively for events. Before visiting, check whether this arrangement is still in effect.

Leisure Activities for Different Timeframes

The Gütsch-Sigristweiher area is a freely accessible local recreation area with walking paths, benches and fire pits. One specific hiking option is the “Burg Recreation Area” route: it is 5.6 kilometres long, takes 1 hour and 35 minutes, and is suitable for families. You can do it independently, and it is part of the Raiffeisen Sumsi Trails; this programme affiliation may change. Distance and duration depend on trail conditions.

By comparison, llama trekking in the area around Wolhusen involves a two-and-a-half-hour walk with an extended picnic break, accompanied by llamas. This lets you choose between a shorter, independent hike and a longer walk with a picnic, without having to combine both activities into a single outing.

The unheated Wolhusen open-air swimming pool offers swimming, sports and play facilities for all ages. The complex includes a 25-metre swimming pool, a children’s and baby pool, a 1-metre diving board, a 3-metre diving tower, a water slide and a leisure pool with water jets and a waterfall. In winter, the ice and roller hockey rink operates as a natural ice rink; in summer, it is used for inline skating. The private Sattenlegi observatory on Steinhuserberg is at an elevation of 806 metres above sea level and welcomes interested visitors for stargazing by request.

Getting Around Wolhusen

During peak travel times, the Wolhusen–Lucerne line runs every half hour. Check the timetable for your travel date. There are 139 covered bicycle parking spaces at Wolhusen railway station.

When planning your visit, the access arrangements make a difference: the Gütsch-Sigristweiher area is freely accessible, while a visit to the Fontannen Mill requires an appointment and the observatory is open by request. You should also take trail conditions into account when hiking.
