Grosswangen combines several hiking routes and cycling paths with a rich history of chapels. When planning, it makes a difference whether you choose a loop that returns to Grosswangen, follow a route to a named destination, or focus on historic buildings. The route details and chapels provide specific points of reference.

Hiking: Loops and Destinations

The hike “To Kastelen Castle Ruins” starts in Grosswangen and follows the Rot. If you prefer a circular hike, Wellbrig–Laupach offers a route via Unterwald, Laupach, Wellbrig and Brestenegg back to Grosswangen. “To Wanger Rigi” is also a loop: it leads via Oberdorf, Oberhöhe and Leidenberg to Innerdorf and back.

Another hiking route leads from Grosswangen via St. Anna Chapel and Gishubel to the nature education area. This gives you a choice of different routes: the routes to Kastelen Castle Ruins and the nature education area lead to named destinations, while Wellbrig–Laupach and “To Wanger Rigi” return to Grosswangen. The named waypoints help you choose a route based on its course.

Cycling Routes with Different Endpoints

Three cycling and mountain biking routes are listed for Grosswangen. One leads via Huben, Liegernmatt, Wellbrig and Willisau back to Grosswangen; the return route is via Ettiswil or Ostergau. A second runs via Breiten, Oberroth, Roth, RĂĽezligen, Stettenbach and WĂĽschiswil to Huben. The third leads via Breiten, Oberdorf, Sigerswil, Sursee, the Baumeisterzentrum and Leidenberg back to Grosswangen.

The endpoints clearly distinguish the routes: two return to Grosswangen, while the route via Breiten, Oberroth and the other named places ends in Huben. Two return options are also listed for the first route. You can use the sequence of places described to decide which route suits your plans.

Chapels and Building History

St. Anna Chapel in Hinterfeld was built around 1570 and rebuilt after a fire in 1929. Above its altar stands a late Gothic statue of Saint Anne with the Virgin Mary and Child, dating from the 15th century. The Josefskapelle in Oberdorf can also be placed in its historical context through several dates: it was first built in 1679 and consecrated on May 16, 1684, in honor of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The building that still stands today dates from 1828 and was renovated in 2007.

Oberroth Chapel is considered the oldest surviving building in the municipality of Grosswangen. Parts of its walls date back to a Romanesque church, probably built in the 12th century. The Lucerne Chapel Trail leads along the Roman Road to this chapel in Grosswangen. For St. Konrad Parish Church, the parish decided in 1857 to build a larger place of worship; the new church was built in the Neo-Gothic style.

Chapels in Sigerswil and Stettenbach also tell of the religious history of the municipality. The chapel in Sigerswil has been dedicated to the country’s patron saint, Brother Klaus, since 1940 and was the first chapel in the canton of Lucerne to receive this dedication. The pilgrimage tradition in Stettenbach goes back a long way: in 1624, Jakob Müller had a small chapel built there in honor of Saint Anthony, replacing an old wayside shrine.

The QR-Gschichtli Trail and Practical Information

Since July 1, 2024, the QR-Gschichtli Trail has also been available in Grosswangen. It offers children aged 4 to 12 an audio journey through nature. The trail is approximately 1 to 1.5 kilometers long and has 10 stations to explore. Its approximate length and number of stations give you two specific details to consider when planning this outing.

A fire pit at the Betagtenzentrum Linde is available for everyone to use free of charge. There is also an information point at the Grosswangen municipal administration: visitors can get brochures and flyers about various regions, attractions and events there. This can help when choosing additional places to visit.
