In Gisikon, nature experiences along the Reuss meet a Kneipp Garden and historic traces. The habitat along the Reuss is shaped by diverse natural surroundings, and there are also magnificent views of the mountains. Visitors planning a stay will find a range of ways to spend the day: paths through nature, Kneipp activities and insights into the history of the village.

Historic Traces in Gisikon

Gisikon was first mentioned around 1270/80 in the rent roll of the Cistercian convent of Rathausen. Walther von Gisinkon is listed there as a benefactor. The history of transport is also part of the village’s character: Gisikon was an important bridgehead for regional traffic from the Seetal and the Freie Ämter, as well as for long-distance traffic from the Black Forest via Schaffhausen and Baden to Lucerne and the Gotthard.

Today’s Gasthof Tell is located in the most recently built customs house, constructed in 1847/48. A monument by the municipal administration building commemorates the Battle of Gisikon during the Sonderbund War of 1847. Together, these places tell of different chapters in the village’s history—from its first mention to a building and a memorial connected with 1847.

The Reuss, Feldhof and Mountain Views

The Feldhof nature conservation area is a special point of interest for nature lovers. The former Feldhof gravel pit is a nationally important amphibian spawning site and an important breeding ground for the edible frog, common frog, common toad, fire salamander and alpine newt. The Gisikon Kneipp Garden is located right on the edge of the nature conservation area.

A pleasant hiking trail for all ages runs through Feldhof and ends at the Kneipp Garden. The Rontaler Höhenweg also runs through Gisikon, Root, Dierikon, Ebikon and Honau for around 14 kilometres. It passes through natural surroundings and can be accessed or left at various bus stops using public transport. Check connections before setting out. In the Rontal area, a section of the Rontal circular trail also follows the renaturalised Ron between Ebikon and Root.

Kneipp Activities and Local Offerings

The Kneipp Garden brings together several treatments and facilities, including water treading, an arm bath, a Kneipp fountain, a pouring station, a Kneipp lounger and a Kneipp or barefoot trail. Kneipp activities for children are also available, and the Kneipp pavilion can be rented. For one-time visits, payment on site is possible in cash or with Twint.

Various guided tours about Kneipp practices and the Kneipp Garden can be booked through the municipality’s room reservation system. Check in advance whether your preferred date is available. You can combine a visit to the garden with a guided tour, while the paths in Feldhof and along the Rontaler Höhenweg offer further ways to explore the surrounding nature.

Café and Getting There

Treff 6038 is a self-service café with a playroom and a reading corner. The Fritigs-Treff takes place at Treff 6038 on several Fridays each year. The programme features food, art and Fyrobig beer, and is also described by the motto “Fine Food & More.” The frequency and format may change; check the current dates before visiting.

Gisikon has a railway station and a bus stop. A nearby motorway junction connects in the direction of Lucerne, Zug and Zurich. If you mainly want to hike the Rontaler Höhenweg, you can also plan your route using the bus stops mentioned above and check connections in advance.
