Retschwil lies on Lake Baldegg and on the eastern slope of the Erlosen. The village is part of the municipality of Hitzkirch in the Hochdorf district of the canton of Lucerne. The settlement is spread across hamlets, farms and houses on the descending slopes and along the lakeshore. Compared with the opposite shore, the Retschwil side of the lake is sparsely settled. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: should it be the lake, a cycling loop or an event in the slowUp Seetal?
Lake Baldegg and the lakeside landscape
The shore of Lake Baldegg bordering Retschwil is largely undeveloped. Woodland and reed belts, as well as species-rich wet meadows, line the shore. The lake is also a nationally significant amphibian spawning site and a stopover for migratory birds. These ecological features shape the character of the lakeside landscape. In Retschwil, information panels about the aeration of Lake Baldegg add a local topic of interest to the landscape experience.
Cycling tours and circular routes
For a shorter loop, the Karin Thürig circular route is a useful guide: it is 11.57 kilometres long, rated easy and requires very little fitness. From Retschwil, it follows the cycle path along the lake towards Ermensee or Hitzkirch as far as the Stäfligen junction, then continues to Nunwil and back to Retschwil. The paved route is suitable for road bikes, inline skates, bicycles, horse-drawn carriages and walking. Its suitability during different seasons depends on the weather.
The Three Lakes Tour calls for a different time commitment and level of effort: at 55.67 kilometres, it is considerably longer and rated moderate, while its fitness requirement is rated easy. From Retschwil, the route climbs to Herlisberg and continues to BeromĂĽnster; along the route, Retschwil lies between Baldegg and Richensee. Comparing the two tours can help you choose between a short, easy loop and a considerably longer ride. A section of the circular route around Lake Baldegg also runs directly along the lakeshore to Retschwil. Conditions on the full loop vary by section.
slowUp Seetal and local history
The slowUp Seetal is a recurring car-free event around Lake Baldegg. The tenth edition took place on Sunday, 16 August 2026, from 10 am to 5 pm and was open to cyclists, walkers and skaters. The 24.5-kilometre route documented for 2024 passed through Hochdorf, Gelfingen, Hitzkirch, Altwis, Mosen, Ermensee, Richensee, Retschwil and Nunwil; from 10 am to 5 pm, it was closed to motorised traffic. For an upcoming edition, check the date and route. At the slowUp in Retschwil, the IGSR runs a food and drink stand; when it is open depends on the event programme.
The coat of arms also tells a story about the village’s history: the lion refers to the Lords of Rinach, who owned property in Retschwil, including a mill. The traditional ski race organised by IGSR Herlisberg-Retschwil originally ran from the Herlisberg restaurant to the former Retschwil schoolhouse. The venue has since changed; this route belongs to the race’s earlier history.
