Rain combines architectural and local history with cycling routes, walking paths and views of the Alpine range. There are also practical public transport connections as well as tasting and shopping options. When planning a stay, you can focus on cultural discoveries, cycling tours or local products.
Churches, chapels and history
The parish church of St. James in Rain was built in 1853–1854 by Wilhelm Keller in the Classical and Baroque styles. The “Herrgott is globt” chapel is in the hamlet of Gundolinge between Rain and Hildisrieden and offers views of the municipality of Rain and the mountain panorama. Rain also offers views of the Alpine range.
Chapels in Rain that are easy to explore on foot include the Adrian Chapel in Oberbueche, the Wendelins Chapel in Sandblatte, the St. Joder Chapel in SĂĽesstannen and the St. Eulogius Chapel in WĂĽesti. You can also discover eight wayside shrines on a walk around Rain. The chapels are individual places to visit, while the walk brings together the wayside shrines in one stroll. There is a Petermann memorial in Gundolinge; Peter von Gundoldingen was Schultheiss of the canton of Lucerne and leader of the Lucerne forces at the Battle of Sempach in 1386.
Cycling routes and walking paths
Rain is included in two cycling routes in different ways. The Willisau-to-Zug section of the Heart Route passes through the municipality. The Hochstammland Tour runs via Römerswil to Rain; from Rain, it follows the Heart Route to Hünenberg. The Heart Route therefore passes through Rain on a section between two cities, while the Hochstammland Tour switches to the Heart Route in Rain. Check current route conditions before setting off.
Numerous walking and hiking paths offer an alternative to cycling; Rain also has a nature reserve with a pond.
Food and local products
At Pura Culina in Rain, the business presentation includes a tasting of various products from its range; water and coffee are also available. Sweet and savoury products are served before and after the presentation. GnossStobe is right next to the church in Rain and is both a restaurant and a bakery. The farm shop at Burri’s Hofgenuss AG, at Sandblatte 7, 6026 Rain, sells distillates and fine spirits; collection is available. Product availability varies by season, so it is worth checking the selection before making a special trip.
