The Renaissance pulpit in Kleinwangen parish church dates from around 1600. The village lies on the sunny slope of the Lindenberg, a fertile moraine ridge formed by the former Reuss Glacier. The church and landscape thus offer different points of focus: the history of a particular building and the geological formation of the area.

Church, settlement history and archaeological traces

The parish church is considered the village’s landmark. It was built in 1724 and extensively redesigned in 1897. Its Renaissance pulpit, dating from around 1600, adds an older feature to the history of the building.

The history of the area extends beyond the church. Ferren, part of Kleinwangen, is identified with the settlement name “Farihcin”, recorded in 893. The foundations of a Roman villa and other Roman finds, including brick fragments and coins, were discovered in the Muracker area. Graves from the Alemannic period were uncovered at Weidlihöhe.

On RĂĽtihubel, east of the village, there is a small fortification belonging to the Knights of Wangen. The ditch and castle mound are visible there. RĂĽtihubel is also a glacially formed drumlin. Here, a distinct landform and visible features of the fortification come together.

Pilgrim routes and hikes

Three pilgrim routes lead to the Maria zum Schnee pilgrimage chapel. They start in Oberdorf in Kleinwangen, in Günikon and in Lieli, and are marked by human-height steles. The restored chapel invites visitors to pause and pray in quiet. Stations of the Cross line the final stretch of the route to the chapel. The “Across the Lindenberg” hiking route also leads from Oberdorf in Kleinwangen to the chapel and the pond in Ibenmoos.

Other hikes focus on different places and connections. The Baldegg–Schloss Heidegg–Gelfingen hike passes through Kleinwangen and continues through the forest to Schloss Heidegg. For this route, you can take the S9 from Gelfingen station back to Baldegg. The Gelfingen–Horben–Baldegg hike runs from Gelfingen via Lieli and Kleinwangen to Baldegg; it can be reached by taking the S9 to Gelfingen station, with the return journey from Baldegg station. The BSF bus line connects Hohenrain and Hochdorf on a circular route via Ottenhusen and Kleinwangen. Check the timetables for the connections mentioned before setting off.

Landscape, views and further discoveries

Ballmoos lies in Lieliwald: a botanically diverse montane pine raised bog at an altitude of about 845 metres. It is one of the last montane pine raised bogs in the Swiss Plateau. In Hohenrain, an exhibition is housed in the Roten Tower at the Johanniterkommende; the tower offers views across the Lucerne Seetal.

The history of Ibenmoos also goes beyond the pilgrimage chapel. Since the 15th century, spa guests from Switzerland and abroad have come to the local spa for rest and recovery. The spa closed shortly after 1830. Another facet of local tradition can be found at the FerrenmĂĽhle in Kleinwangen, where flour is produced using traditional methods in an old mill.

For active recreation, Kleinwangen has a beach volleyball court. The sports facilities near the school buildings are open to the public. Alongside history and landscape, sports facilities offer another way to experience the village.
