Ballwil offers a tangible glimpse into the Ice Age alongside a rich architectural history. The gravel walls at Erlebnis Eiszeit show how glaciers advanced and retreated during the last Ice Age. The parish church, chapels and other historic buildings offer a different way to explore the town. This gives you several options when planning your visit: a trip to the learning centre, hikes, or an exploration of Ballwil’s architectural history.

Erlebnis Eiszeit and planning your visit

Erlebnis Eiszeit is an educational project about the Ice Age, archaeology, geology and biology. At the information stations, you can solve puzzles, touch exhibits and try out activities. The topics are not just explained but linked to hands-on tasks; the gravel walls at Erlebnis Eiszeit also reveal the movement of glaciers across the landscape.

The Erlebnis Eiszeit area of the Ice Age learning centre in Ballwil is freely accessible by prior arrangement. Be sure to arrange your visit in advance and confirm the details in good time. Erlebnis Eiszeit has a barbecue area with a picnic spot and a toilet. The experience area and toilet are accessible to wheelchair users and pushchairs; the path, which is marked throughout, is paved.

From Eschenbach railway station, it takes about 25 minutes on foot to reach the entrance to Erlebnis Eiszeit at the Lötscher gravel works. Bicycles can be left at the entrance. The approximate walking time and the option to leave your bicycle there will help you factor the visit into your travel plans.

Kulturabenteuer Seetal offers children a time-travel activity featuring Ona, the Neanderthal girl, and Jugi, the mammoth calf. Children visit marked locations and complete tasks there. The activity with the two characters takes place at the Lötscher gravel works in Ballwil and complements the information stations with a series of tasks for children.

Hikes and trails

The 8-kilometre “A Look Back into the Ice Age” hike passes through Ballwil before reaching the gravel works. Another option is the Ballwil–Horben–Hitzkirch route: it is 16.89 kilometres long and rated moderate. This gives you two specific hikes to compare by distance; the longer route also has a moderate difficulty rating.

Ottenhusen is another destination for a walk in the area around Ballwil: from Ballwil railway station, you can reach it via hiking trails in about 40 minutes. Route details may change, so check the route before setting out. Ottenhusen is also home to the buried ruins of a Roman villa, which are brought to life through an educational programme. They are a distinct point of historical interest in the area around Ballwil and should not be confused with the buildings in the town itself.

Ballwil in the Seetal

Ballwil is in the Seetal valley in the canton of Lucerne, south of Lake Baldegg. The Seetal is a valley of castles and lakes, with e-bike routes and hiking trails throughout the region.

GĂĽtschweiher in Ballwil is a former peat-cutting pond and a nature reserve.

Architectural heritage and history

Built in 1847, Ballwil’s St. Margaretha Parish Church is an example of the Munich Romantic style. The church was designed as a spacious, classical hall church with neo-Byzantine elements. The church and its furnishings were designated a protected cultural monument on 21 June 1966. The parish church was restored in 1976/77 to return it to its original appearance. These dates distinguish the design, protected status and later restoration, rather than combining them into a single building phase.

Other buildings mark different periods: the Spycher granary at Margrethenhof in Ballwil dates from 1743. The Hochstudhaus in Wissenwegen near Ballwil was built around 1600 and is considered one of the oldest farmhouses in the canton of Lucerne. Wald Plague Chapel dates from 1636 and bears the inscriptions Heinrich Späni and IHS. Gibelflüh Chapel, also known as St. Antonius and Franz Xaver, is a protected historic building in Ballwil. Schlossmühle Ballwil has a waterwheel. The substantial tower of Ballwil’s former parish church was added in 1814 and still stands today.
