Laax can be explored through a range of highlights: a lake in the middle of the village, a treetop walk between Laax Murschetg and Laax Dorf, historic stops in the old village centre, and sports activities in both winter and summer. The Senda dil Dragun connects the two parts of the village over 1.56 kilometres. Five experience platforms offer places to sit, information and views. Along the trail, 38 nature information panels cover native animals, plants and tree species; explanations are available in German, English and Romansh. The route brings together scenic views and insights into nature topics.
Laaxersee and Village Trails
Laaxersee, known in Romansh as Lag Grond, lies in the middle of the village at 1,016 metres above sea level. It is a five-minute walk from the Laax GR, See/Lag bus stop. The path is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Swimming and pedal boating are possible at the lake. On-site facilities also include a beach volleyball court, a children's playground and fire pits. The seasonal availability of leisure activities and facilities may vary.
When the lake's surface freezes over in winter, it becomes a natural ice rink for all age groups. This seasonal difference has a practical impact on planning: ice skating depends on the lake freezing over. As a separate year-round offering in Laax, Aua Grava includes an indoor swimming pool as well as wellness and fitness facilities.
Cultural Trail, Museum and History
The Laax Cultural Trail is a walking route around the old village centre. Historical and geographical information panels explain points of interest along the way. At the local museum, which opened in 1980 and was formerly a village dairy, you can see the facilities and way of life of a farming family 150 years ago, as well as objects from agriculture, crafts and sports from earlier and more recent times. The museum also has a café and changing exhibitions.
CULARTA – atelier e gallaria – is a place for artists and art enthusiasts to work and meet. Public workshops and exhibitions are held there. Another historic landmark is Laax Parish Church: villagers built the present-day Baroque church between 1675 and 1678. On 17 October 1677, it was dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the Mother of God Mary, and its patrons, Gallus and Othmar.
In the late Middle Ages, Lagenberg Castle was the centre of the lordship of Laax and was directly under the authority of the German Empire. It was the residence of a Habsburg bailiff. Today, restored remains of its walls stand on the wooded hill between the village of Laax and Murschetg. The historic attractions therefore include both the surviving traces of the castle and the architectural and religious history of the parish church.
Winter Sports, Biking and More Activities
LAAX is known as a winter sports destination with snow parks; activities such as rafting, pedal boating, hiking and forest walks are also available. The Never End Trail is described for experienced riders. It runs from the Crap Sogn Gion mountain station at 2,228 metres to the Laax Murschetg valley station at 1,020 metres, descending 1,150 metres. Northshore features, natural rock passages, drops, tables and sculpted berms define its character.
The Hubertus Archery Park starts at Crap Sogn Gion and leads to Curnius, with 24 different stations along the way. Check the lift connections before setting out. In summer, the rocks Park Tower offers a 30-metre vertical drop, a zipline over the rocksresort Park and the Snakerun, as well as a 73-metre-long spiral slide. The rocksresort Park also has a mini ramp, an Urban Surfwave, a Snakerun, a playground, a trampoline, various sports equipment and slacklines for skateboards, scooters and BMX bikes.
Landscape and Getting There
Lag digl Oberst is listed in both the inventory of fens and the inventory of amphibian spawning sites of national importance. Most of the area and its surroundings consist of reed beds, tall- and short-sedge fens, purple moor-grass meadows and transition mires. The area is considered an important resting place for birds. Another regional natural attraction is Lake Cauma, a mountain lake in the Flims region. The Rhine Gorge is about 30 minutes from Laax.
The easiest way to get there is via Zurich Airport, from where you can continue by public transport. LAAX can be reached from Zurich Airport by train in less than two hours. Checking the connection before departure helps with planning.
