S-Chanf lies at an altitude of around 1,660 metres on the upper reaches of the Inn, in the Upper Engadine and in the La Plaiv region. The municipality belongs to the Maloja region and is a substantial street village. At the same time, S-Chanf lies at the entrance to Val Trupchun, known as a deer arena. S-Chanf is one of the municipalities that lease land to the Swiss National Park. This means there are several aspects to consider when planning a visit: nature and hiking, village history, and activities at Serlas Parc.

Val Trupchun and the hike to Varusch

In autumn, during the rutting season, hundreds of stags compete for the attention of the hinds in Val Trupchun. This gives the area a distinct seasonal appeal for nature lovers. The S-chanf (PrasĂĽras)-Varusch circular hike starts at the PrasĂĽras car park near S-Chanf and leads through a moss-rich forest with a great diversity of plants in the undergrowth. After just under an hour, the hike reaches the Varusch park hut. The Swiss National Park begins just beyond the hut.

The time given refers to reaching the park hut, not to the duration of the entire circular hike. This helps put the section described into context without assuming a total walking time. As trail, car park and access conditions can change, check the latest information before setting off.

Activities for different weather conditions

ParcAlpin rope park is also located at PrasĂĽras, on the way to the Swiss National Park. It offers six courses of varying difficulty, themed around the wildlife of the national park. Seasonal opening times may vary, so check the latest dates before visiting.

Serlas Parc in S-Chanf has a 450 m² climbing hall with a 120 m² bouldering area. Climbing is possible there all year round, even in the rain. Serlas Parc also has four micro-bowling lanes, each 12 metres long. So, alongside hiking and the rope park, there are other activities to choose from. Check the latest operating conditions when making specific plans.

Village and cultural history

A guided village tour leads past patrician houses and includes, among other things, a visit to the Reformed church, with its impressive organ and stained-glass paintings. As tour times may change, it is advisable to check the dates in advance. St. Maria Church is also part of the village’s history: it has been documented since 1450, its late Gothic replacement building dates from 1493, and its tower is older.

Botta Striera, a rocky hill at an altitude of around 2,050 metres, lies north of the village. A prehistoric settlement site was discovered there in 1932; it was used from the Middle Bronze Age through to the La Tène period. Historical forms of the place name also go back a long way: S-Chanf was mentioned in 1137/39 as Scaneves and in 1356 as Scanevoer. Together with the traces at Botta Striera, these records offer different glimpses into the history of the place.

Getting your bearings locally

At the municipal office, the S-Chanf Tourist Information offers up-to-date brochures and panoramic maps, as well as digital visitor information on touchscreens. These resources can help you find your way around hikes, cultural attractions and the different activities. Which options suit your stay depends on whether you are mainly planning to experience the autumn season in Val Trupchun, hike to Varusch, explore the village’s history or enjoy activities at Serlas Parc.
