Madulain can be discovered from many different angles: a medieval castle, late Gothic church architecture, Engadine building culture and paths along the Inn sit alongside winter experiences and living village traditions. The village lies in the Maloja region on the left bank of the Inn, about 10 kilometres northeast of St. Moritz, amid the wide-open landscape of the Upper Engadine. Forests, meadows and mountains surround this peaceful alpine settlement. When planning your trip, a useful first question is whether you are mainly interested in local history, winter activities or exploring the wider region.

Castle, churches and village culture

Guardaval Castle was built between 1237 and 1251 on the orders of Bishop Volkard von Neuburg. As an episcopal administrative seat, it was used in particular to collect the major and minor tolls. From Madulain railway station, both the historic castle and the stage for the Guardaval Festivals are about a 20-minute walk away. This is an approximate walking time and applies to both destinations mentioned.

In the village centre is Stalla Madulain, a gallery for contemporary art in a barn built in 1488. The original structure was preserved during the light restoration. Works by local artists and artists inspired by the Engadine are exhibited and sold there. Traditional Engadine houses and the Church of San Andrea are also part of Madulain’s cultural heritage.

A document from 1370 mentions a church in Madulain for the first time; documents from 1441 and 1454 explicitly name San Bartrumieu. The church can be visited daily from 08:00 to 18:00. Check the opening hours before travelling, as they may change. Inside, the space is defined by a late Gothic choir ceiling with a rib vault and a central keystone painted with a Hospitaller cross.

A guided village tour covering Madulain’s history, development and cultural significance takes place every Tuesday at 17:00. As the published schedule may change, it is advisable to check the latest dates. Another cultural highlight is Chalandamarz: in Madulain, the spring festival is celebrated around 1 March. It bids farewell to winter and welcomes spring, while also representing Romansh culture and a living sense of community. Visitors are welcome. Check the details for the year of your trip.

Winter, landscapes and alpine cuisine

Madulain has cold winters and pleasantly cool summers. In winter, the seasonal Madulain–Zuoz ice trail offers views of snow-covered mountains, old Engadine houses and the sparkling Inn. Check conditions and operating status before travelling. At Alp Es-cha Dadour, you can rent a sled in winter to travel to Madulain or Zuoz; confirm availability in advance.

Alp Es-cha Dadour offers fresh alpine cuisine and culinary experiences at its alpine restaurant. Opening and programme are seasonal and may change. Alpine cheese, alpine butter and yoghurt are available for direct purchase; their availability may also vary by season. Winter activities and culinary offerings therefore differ in season and focus, rather than automatically forming a year-round programme.

Trails and regional orientation

Walking and hiking trails follow the Inn and pass through the wide-open landscapes of the Upper Engadine. The region around Madulain is well suited to walks, cross-country skiing and mountain tours. The Via Engiadina is another possible point of reference: the long-distance hiking trail starts in Madulain or passes by the village. For cycling, the Inn cycle path runs through Madulain; a route through the village is recommended.

The Engadin Bus connects Madulain with the villages of the Upper Engadine and the ski areas. As routes and timetables may change, check connections for your trip. When planning, it is worth bearing in mind the specific extent of each activity: the Inn cycle path runs through Madulain, while the walks and hiking trails described also cover the wider Upper Engadine landscape.

Choose your stay based on the time of year

If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Madulain, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on. For Chalandamarz, the period around 1 March and the details for the specific year are key; for the ice trail or sled rental, winter conditions and current availability are the main considerations. Those interested in exploring village history and architecture will find plenty to discover at the castle, gallery, churches and guided village tour. Opening hours and dates are practical details to check before travelling.
