Zernez is known as the gateway to the Swiss National Park. This makes the town particularly interesting for a stay focused on nature: at the National Park Centre, the focus is on interpreting the wilderness, while the park itself offers hiking trails and seasonal opportunities for wildlife watching. At the same time, local attractions extend beyond the National Park—from the listed Church of San Maurizius to the family swimming pool and the natural ice rink in winter.

Discover the National Park and plan hikes

The National Park Centre presents the exhibition “Wilderness at the Centre” about the Swiss National Park in four exhibition rooms. Interactive stations invite visitors to step into the role of researchers. The exhibition’s concept therefore includes practical opportunities for discovery as well as displays.

A media guide is available in five languages: German, French, Italian, Romansh and English. Exhibition details and language availability may change, so check them before your visit. If you are planning a hike in the Swiss National Park, staff at the National Park Centre information desk can assist you. Check before your trip whether this personal service is available.

The Swiss National Park has 100 kilometres of hiking trails across 21 official routes. Visitors can also be accompanied by guides in the park; this option is available seasonally and should be checked before your trip. The trails and the possibility of a guide are separate aspects of planning: the routes make up the hiking options, while a guide is an additional option.

Seasonal wildlife watching

During the rutting season, red deer can be observed at Stabelchod on the Ofen Pass in Zernez. This is a nature experience with a clearly defined season; the exact timing and whether the animals can be seen depend on natural conditions. This seasonal window is therefore an important part of planning for travellers with a particular interest in wildlife.

Church art at San Maurizius

San Maurizius is a listed Protestant Reformed church in an elevated position above Zernez. The church interior features stucco work in the early Baroque style that is unusual for GraubĂĽnden. This gives the site a distinctive cultural focus alongside its nature attractions.

The church’s furnishings include an organ dating from 1741 with a three-part façade. The façade is the visible front of an organ; here, it is divided into three parts. The organ’s date and the early Baroque style of the stucco work provide different, specific points of interest for exploring the church interior.

Swimming pool and natural ice rink

The Zernez family swimming pool offers a dedicated place to swim. It has a children’s area and a 25-metre pool; the outdoor pool features a current channel. These clearly defined areas and pool features give you several options to consider when planning your stay.

In winter, a natural ice rink opens next to Planta-Wildenberg Castle. During the winter season, it is free to use for ice skating when temperatures are suitable. As use depends on temperatures, check the conditions before your visit.
