Tarasp Castle was built around 1040 and expanded into a border fortress in the 16th century. Today it houses a collection of antique, modern and contemporary art. On a guided tour, you can enjoy panoramic views from the castle walls; advance registration is required. The furnishings also have a history of their own: old wood panelling and furniture from GraubĂĽnden patrician houses, Tyrolean manor houses and Germany were acquired for the castle.

Castle History and Mill Craftsmanship

The Muglin da Tarasp offers a different kind of cultural experience. The restored mill has been grinding flour again since 2023. It produces local flour and pearl barley and offers guided tours. Tarasp thus brings together a range of themes: the history of the border fortress, art in the castle and a mill back in operation. If you plan to visit both, bear in mind their different visitor arrangements: advance registration is required for the castle tour, while the Muglin offers guided tours.

Circular Hike to Lai Nair

The Tarasp circular hike is rated easy, is 6.4 kilometres long and takes about one hour and 30 minutes. The elevation gain and loss are both listed as 250 metres. The route passes through a raised bog and an open larch grove on its way to Lai Nair. Check route conditions before setting out; information about the path and distance may change. The estimated duration and elevation figures provide practical guidance for planning your day.

Lai Nair is a typical moor lake with a shallow, dark water surface and silting shores. There are picnic and resting spots on the eastern shore, with views extending to Piz Minschun and Piz Champatsch. The circular hike thus combines a trail, moorland and lake in a clearly described tour. If you prefer to include individual scenic spots in a longer stay, the nearby Clemgia Gorge, Val Plavna and prominent 3,000-metre peaks are also worth considering. Tarasp also provides access to the Swiss National Park.

Springs, Drinking Hall and Access

The BĂĽvetta Tarasp drinking hall was built between 1875 and 1876, with an octagonal rotunda for the three springs Bonifacius, Emerita and Lucius. Current access conditions are important for visitors: access behind the BĂĽvetta is currently not possible due to the risk of rockfall. Check the access information again before visiting.

Funtana Bonifacius is on the right bank of the Inn between Ardez and Scuol. It can be reached on foot via a bridge from the cantonal road. Deposits at the spring formed a large, strikingly reddish spring tufa. Its location and access make this a different place to visit from the drinking hall described above; when planning, check the location details and access information for each site.

Tarasp as a Starting Point

Tarasp lies on the right side of the valley at the foot of Piz Pisoc. The village is spread across ten settlements and has no central village centre. When looking for a hotel for a stay in Tarasp, it is therefore worth comparing the specific location of each property with your planned visits, rather than assuming there is a compact village centre.

Tarasp can be reached hourly by the Rhaetian Railway via Scuol-Tarasp station. PostBus services run from Scuol, Vulpera, Ftan, Sent, Strada, Ramosch, VnĂ  and Martina. From the north, the car shuttle through the Vereina Tunnel or the FlĂĽela Pass leads into the Lower Engadine and Tarasp. If you plan to travel by train or PostBus, check the timetable for your travel date.

The wider area also offers a range of activities: hiking and biking are popular around Tarasp and Vulpera. Other options include a small ski area with a children's ski school, winter hiking trails, cross-country ski trails, sledging routes and a natural ice rink. You can tailor your stay to your planned activities, with the castle, mill and trails around Lai Nair offering specific ideas for places to visit.
