Susch is a pass village at the foot of the FlĂĽela Pass; the Inn flows through its center. In the Lower Engadine, Susch is the only village where the river follows this course. Its location in the triangle between Scuol, Zernez and Davos also places the village in its regional context. When looking for accommodation, you can plan your stay around your interests: routes through the village, winter walks and buildings from different historical periods give Susch several distinct highlights.
Hiking and winter trails around Susch
Those who want to explore on foot can choose between a route that passes through Susch and trails with a more specific starting point or destination. Stage 6 of the Via Engiadina passes through the village. The Susch–Prasüra–Lavin winter hike starts at the railway station, passes through Sur Punt and a snow-covered forest, and reaches open terrain shortly before Lavin. The Surpunt winter trail is an easy winter walk between Susch and Lavin. It passes through forest and open terrain and follows the Inn; the route is listed as four kilometers long and taking about one hour and twenty minutes.
By comparison, the round trip from Susch to Fortezza Rohan takes about an hour. Another hike, Susch–Jöriseen–Wägerhus, starts at Susch railway station and follows the Val Susasca towards the Jöriseen lakes. It crosses the Jöriseen high plateau and then climbs to the Jöriflüelafurgga. From the Wägerhus stop, the PostBus takes hikers back to Susch; check the connection before setting out. This offers a choice of trails with different destinations and stated durations, without requiring them to be combined into a single itinerary.
Cycling routes with different destinations
There are also several named routes to consider when planning a cycling trip. The Zernez–Guarda section of the Inn Bike Trail follows the valley floor along the Inn to Susch, with open views of Piz Linard along the way. The Susch–Alp Zeznina Dadaint–Lavin–Susch cycling tour starts in Susch and passes through Sur Punt towards Pradatsch. The regional Engiadina Bassa bike route, by contrast, runs from Susch to Martina. The routes therefore focus on different destinations and courses.
Culture and architectural history in the village
Muzeum Susch is located on the site of a medieval monastery in the Inn valley and opened in December 2018. Its complex was part of a rural monastery built in 1157 at the FlĂĽela Pass, on a pilgrim route to Rome and Santiago de Compostela. A brewery building was added in the 19th century. Muzeum offers informative guided tours and presents exhibitions, experimental forms of presentation, performances, conferences, lectures, events and an interdisciplinary studio program.
The Reformed Church of San Jon also brings together different building periods: the late Gothic replacement building dates from around 1515, while the tower is Romanesque and unarticulated. Fragments of a mural from around 1515 remain on the south wall of the choir; they may depict a cycle of apostles. Together with La Tuor, the church defines the village’s appearance. La Tuor Planta is a distinctive five-story building with a footprint of 8 × 8 meters. Its Baroque onion dome probably dates from the 17th century; La Praschun tower is dated to the 12th or 13th century.
The ruins of Fortezza Rohan that can be seen today were built in 1635 by Duke Henri II de Rohan during the Thirty Years’ War and the Bündner Wirren. The star-shaped fortress belongs to a type developed in the Netherlands. Sections of the original walls, 2.5 to 5 meters high, remain. A visit to Rohan Fortress is particularly recommended. Susch’s former role as a place of lodging is also part of the village’s history: the village flourished when traders crossed the Flüela Pass in the era of pack trains and stagecoaches.
