Ftan is a village in the Lower Engadine in the Swiss canton of GraubĂĽnden. It lies on a south-facing sunny terrace in the middle of the Lower Engadine. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on different things: village history and architecture, hiking trails, biking options or seasonal winter activities. Which of these shape your stay depends on how much time you plan to spend on local history and festivals or on outdoor activities.
Village Character and History
In the old part of Ftan Pitschen, the houses are arranged in a cross shape. Most of the houses, newly built in the 17th century, have been restored and decorated with sgraffito. The Ftan–Scuol panoramic hike also passes through Ftan Pitschen: along the way, you can see village fountains and Engadine houses decorated with sgraffito. The route starts at the Ftan, cumün PostBus stop; its details may be adjusted seasonally.
The Reformed church stands in Ftan Grond. After the village fire of 1622, it was rebuilt in 1633–34. Its tower stands separately on a rock north of the church. The parish of Ftan is documented from 1492; the transition from Catholicism to the Reformed faith took place around 1542. This makes it possible to explore the village’s architectural history and the history of its parish through specific places and dates.
The Muglin da Ftan houses two mills in their original condition. A demonstration shows how grain is ground into the finest flour. Access and the visitor programme may change during conservation work.
Hiking and Getting Outdoors
Another tour is the Prui–Piz Clünas–Alp Laret–Ftan hike, which starts from the Ftan, cumün stop and takes you by chairlift to Prui. Alp Laret is about a one-hour-and-45-minute walk above Ftan. It can be reached on foot or by bike; the stated walking time may vary depending on conditions.
The PalĂĽds trail centre near Ftan has an uphill trail and two lines with different characteristics: the Pachific Line is easier and flowy, while the Sulvadi Line is technically challenging. The comparison is based on the described characteristics of the trails. For a scooter ride, the ten-kilometre descent from Motta Naluns to Scuol passes through Prui and Ftan. It goes past the Ftan valley station and through the historic district of Ftan Pitschen.
Natural sites offer different experiences too: the Lais da Pesch biotope lies just behind the Hochalpines Institut. The Lai da Padnal swimming lake is below the institute and is surrounded by mountain scenery. In the upper Val Tasna, you will find wide alpine pastures and fascinating mountain flora.
Winter and Village Life
Direct access to the Motta Naluns ski and snow sports area is on the north side of the village, at the chairlift valley station; the lift operates seasonally. The cross-country ski trail starts on the flat stretch towards Ardez. At night, you can ski laps there under floodlights, though trail grooming and lighting depend on the season. A toboggan run descends about four kilometres through the forest; it also operates seasonally. This means there are various winter activities to choose from, without implying that their conditions are the same.
The Schüschaiver is part of village life and is celebrated every year on the Saturday before the first Monday in February. The morning programme features traditional tree felling. In the afternoon, the village youth’s randomly paired couples, dressed in Engadine festive costume, parade to the schoolhouse; there are also performances by village clubs and the traditional Schüschaiver Ball.
Chalandamarz in Ftan also takes place on a Saturday and is held as a carnival procession. Masked schoolchildren and young men walk through the village, hitting girls and adults with thin, inflated pig bladders. Both customs give a stay a cultural dimension that differs from the trails and scenic destinations.
Plan Your Journey
There is a direct hourly connection between Scuol-Tarasp and the Ftan, cumĂĽn PostBus stop. Check the current timetable before travelling. This provides a clear distinction for planning: the stop is the starting point for the panoramic hike mentioned above and the chairlift connection to Prui; the historic village layout, the mills and the annual festivals offer other reasons to set aside time in Ftan.
