A hike from Zernez to Brail via Prazet follows the Via Engiadina and covers about 7.5 kilometres in around two hours. The history of the Protestant Church of San Tumasch also shapes the village: it was first mentioned in a document in 1499. If you are planning a stay, you can consider hiking trails, travel options and local history as different points of focus.

Location and travel options

Brail is a district of the municipality of Zernez in the Lower Engadine, at an altitude of 1,636 metres. The Swiss National Park borders the village to the south. Linguistically and culturally, Brail is already considered part of the Upper Engadine; this classification is linked to the Romansh Puter dialect. Its geographical location and cultural affiliation therefore describe two different aspects.

Brail is connected to the Engadine cantonal road. The village can be reached by the Rhaetian Railway from Chur, Landquart/Prättigau or the Upper Engadine. Cinuos-chel/Brail station is on the Engadine line between Pontresina and Scuol. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel dates: services may change.

Hikes with different routes

The Zernez–Brail hike is 7.5 kilometres long and takes about two hours. This time is a guide; the distance and duration may change if the route is altered. The route goes via Prazet along the Via Engiadina. It is considered suitable for pushchairs, though the specific trail conditions are still relevant when planning. Along the way, there are views of the Inn or of the opposite side of the valley in the national park.

Another tour leads from Brail to Zernez via Alp Barlas-ch and Alp Munt. It starts at the bus stop in Brail and initially crosses meadows towards Alp Barlas-ch. The rest of the route passes from one valley to another and crosses several small mountain streams. The hikes therefore differ mainly in their routes: the connection from Zernez to Brail goes via Prazet, while the tour via Alp Barlas-ch and Alp Munt crosses meadows and valleys and passes over mountain streams.

A winter route passing the village

The Cinuos-chel–Brail route also offers a different perspective on the village. It passes Brail, which can be reached via a steep descent. The route is part of the «Loipa dal Sulagl», meaning «sun trail» in English, and lies on the sunny side of the Engadine. Winter conditions can vary, so take them into account when planning.

San Tumasch and local history

The Protestant Church of San Tumasch was first mentioned in a document in 1499 and converted to the Reformed faith in 1553. The present church building dates from around 1650 and was last renovated in 1984/86. The dates mark different stages: the first mention predates the construction of the present building, while the renovation refers to a later alteration. The church thus provides a historical point of interest alongside Brail’s hiking trails and location.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans

When looking for accommodation in Brail, it helps to first organise your travel arrangements and planned activities. For hikes, you can compare routes and starting points; for train travel, Cinuos-chel/Brail station is a useful reference point. The route information offers different details: for Zernez–Brail, the distance and approximate duration are given, while the tour via Alp Barlas-ch and Alp Munt focuses on the route and scenery. Choose the focus that suits your stay, and check the train connections and trail conditions you will need for your dates before setting off.
