The Carschenna rock carvings are located above Sils im Domleschg; visiting conditions differ considerably at Campell Castle and Baldenstein Castle. This contrast between a prehistoric site, an accessible castle ruin and a private castle shapes how you plan a cultural visit. Sils im Domleschg is a political municipality in the Viamala Region of the Canton of GraubĂĽnden.

Castles with Different Visiting Conditions

Campi, the ruin of Campell Castle, lies at the entrance to the Schin Gorge and is open to the public. It is also a monument of national importance. Check local access information before you travel. Schloss Baldenstein, by contrast, is privately owned and not open to the public. If you would like to clarify access again, consult official local information.

The tower of Baldenstein Castle dates back to the 12th century. Since 1954, Ehrenfels Castle has served as a youth hostel. These different stories add to the picture of castles that do not all have the same role or offer the same opportunities for visitors.

Planning Hikes and Stages

The Domleschg Castle Trail passes through Sils im Domleschg and can be explored in stages. It is also possible to combine it with the post bus. This lets you break the route into sections or include public transport in your stage planning. Check the current timetable in advance, as schedules may change.

Another hike starts at the village church in Sils: the route “From Sils i.D. to Hohen Rätien Castle and the Carschenna Rock Carvings” follows a historic mule track. Conditions on the trail may vary seasonally, so take this into account when planning. From Hohen Rätien, the Carschenna rock carvings are about a 45-minute walk away. Actual walking time depends on conditions.

Rock Art and Views at Carschenna

The Carschenna rock art is located on a hill east of and above Sils im Domleschg, right at the edge of a precipice several hundred metres deep. It is among Switzerland’s most important prehistoric sites. The motifs described include, above all, concentric ring patterns with a cup mark in the centre, as well as animal depictions. The Crap Carschenna viewpoint offers views of Domleschg, Thusis and Heinzenberg.

Art on the Albula

The Kunsthalle an der Albula offers another cultural attraction. In its gallery space, it displays sculptures and paintings by Priska Schwab and Claudio Caprez across almost 500 m². Visitors can visit the artists’ open studio, learn about how their latest works are created and speak with them in person. Visiting arrangements may change; check the current options in advance.

Domleschg Through the Seasons

Across the wider Domleschg area, the landscape also changes with the seasons. The valley is considered one of the most beautiful and varied in Graubünden and is also known as the “orchard of Graubünden” for its exceptionally favourable climate. When the apple trees blossom in Domleschg in spring, the mountains in the background are still deep in snow. This perspective on the valley adds a seasonal view of the wider region to Sils’s historical and archaeological attractions.
