If you are considering Sarn as a destination for a getaway on Heinzenberg, village history and active pursuits meet amid the mountain scenery: the Tguma circular hike is 12.8 km long, there are hiking trails in winter, and the Sarn-Heinzenberg ski area has easy to intermediate pistes. Sarn is a hamlet in the municipality of Cazis in the canton of Graubünden and lies in the middle of the Heinzenberg region. There are therefore several ways to shape your trip, from the compact village centre to winter sports. When looking for a hotel in Sarn, you can consider whether the church and local history, a hike or the pistes should define your stay.

Village Setting and History

The clustered village of Sarn lies in the middle of the Heinzenberg region. To the west, the village is bordered by a mountain range between Tguma (2,163 m above sea level) and Präzer Höhe (2,120 m). In the compact village centre, some imposing houses are grouped around the church. Its main structure is square, while the upper floor is octagonal; the onion-shaped roof is topped by a lantern. The church’s opening is dated to 1679 on the basis of the inscription on the pulpit. Sarn is also considered the true starting point of Graubünden Brown Cattle breeding: the first Brown Cattle breeding cooperative was founded here in the 19th century. Sarn was first mentioned in writing in 1156. In the mid-12th century, a large estate belonging to Cazis Monastery, with five Hufen in Sarn, is documented; in 1257, Churwalden Monastery owned property in the village. Coins from Roman times have also been found in Sarn.

Tguma Circular Hike, Winter Trails and Mountain Biking

The Tguma circular hike is 12.8 km long and starts and ends in Sarn Lescha. It leads to Tguma, whose highest point is 2,163 m above sea level. Its length and summit destination give the hike a clearly defined character. It can be reached by PostBus from Thusis railway station. If you are planning to travel to the circular hike by public transport, you can take this connection into account.

The hiking options differ in how they are described, which can help you choose a route: the Tguma loop has a set distance and a summit destination, while the winter hike is a gently ascending high-level trail. If you want to choose a hike based on its length and summit destination, the Tguma loop offers both of these points of reference. By contrast, the winter high-level trail is characterised by its gentle ascent. The marked Heinzenberg Villages Route MTB Local No. 622 also passes through Sarn, adding a mountain bike route to the options.

Skiing on Heinzenberg

The Sarn-Heinzenberg ski area extends from 1,300 to 2,163 m above sea level and offers easy to intermediate pistes. The Lescha-Dultschinas chairlift and the Dultschinas-Sarner Höhe ski lift provide access to the runs. At the Dultschinas mid-station, the family-friendly facilities include a practice lift and a magic carpet, suitable for taking your first steps in the snow. If you are travelling with children and considering how they might get started with skiing, these two practice facilities offer a concrete point of reference.
