Discover Präz through its local history and activities in the high-altitude area. The church and castle ruins point to different historical chapters; the Tilla Adventure Trail and fallow deer viewing offer clearly defined activities, while the Heinzenberger Ridge Trail describes a route of its own, over Präzer Höhi and back to Präz.

Local history and elevation

Präz is a district of the municipality of Cazis in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. The village lies at 1,182 m above sea level; its elevation ranges from 796 to 2,119 m above sea level. Präz Church was built in 1488 and dedicated to Saint Mary on 8 September and Saint George on 23 April. The baptismal font also adds a distinctive architectural touch: its base is twisted to the left, the bowl transitions from circular to octagonal, and it is decorated with eight blank coats of arms.

Heinzenberg Castle Ruins are the remains of a once extensive castle complex on a rocky hill below Präz. The castle was probably founded around 1200 by the Barons of Vaz. One tower dates from around 1200; the castle served as the seat of the Vazer rulers, and later of the Werdenberg and Rhäzüns families. The ruins are open to the public. As operating conditions may change, check the latest access information before your visit. From Präz, the fire pit near the castle ruins is about a 20-minute walk away.

Plan experiences and trails

The Heinzenberger Ridge Trail follows the Heinzenbergergrat along a narrow panoramic trail to Präzer Höhi. The route then descends via Präzer Alp to Präz. Conditions can vary at higher elevations; take the latest conditions into account when planning. Präz village is accessible from Thusis by PostBus. Check the current timetable before travelling.

The Tilla Adventure Trail in Präz has eight stations featuring stories about Tilla. Play options include a hopping course, a zipline and a suspension bridge. Allow about 1 to 2 hours for the trail. The 2026 weekly programme “Fun and Games at Tilla’s” includes storytelling, treasure hunts, craft activities and nature-based activities. It is for children aged five and over and takes place in all weather.

On the fallow deer viewing visit, you can observe a herd above Präz. The herd lives at 1,500 m above sea level, and the viewing takes place outdoors in all weather. The experience lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours and can be booked online; availability is subject to the provider’s booking calendar. Check it before planning. The fallow deer viewing and the Tilla Adventure Trail take a similar amount of time: allow about 1 to 1.5 hours for the former and about 1 to 2 hours for the latter. They differ in content, with animal watching on one and stories and play stations on the other.
