Flerden combines a peaceful location on sunny Heinzenberg with a Romanesque church, traces of the village’s history and routes leading to different destinations. The well-maintained landscape is shaped by agriculture. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Flerden, you can plan your stay around specific differences: one walking trail leads to nine themed stops, while other routes end in Flerden or continue through the village.
Village Trails and Routes on Heinzenberg
The Flerden walking trail features nine stops with themed stories. A free Walking Trail MiniGuide brochure is available at the starting point by Flerden Town Hall, in front of the waste disposal building. The Brunnenweg follows a different route: it starts at the school and ends at the old school and rectory. When choosing between the two trails, the key points of reference differ: the walking trail has nine stops, while the Brunnenweg is defined by its start and end points.
Flerden offers opportunities for recreation in a hiking and ski area. The Heinzenberger Bergseen hike ends in Flerden at an altitude of 1,231 m. Another described route follows a well-developed network of paths into the village centre and then descends via the farms of Quadra and Dim to Masein: the Heinzenberg Central Circular Route.
The routes connecting Flerden with Masein also follow different courses. The Heinzenberger Dörferroute MTB Local Route No. 622 passes through Flerden and then via Masein back to Thusis; check local trail conditions before setting off. The Mazza-Cula route runs from Masein to Flerden, where there is a stop for refreshments, and then returns to Masein via a different route. The endpoint is a specific difference when choosing a route: the Heinzenberger Bergseen hike ends in Flerden, the Mazza-Cula route returns to Masein, and the MTB village route leads via Masein to Thusis.
Romanesque Church and Village History
The nave of the Reformed Church is part of a Romanesque complex built around 1300; its semicircular apse was excavated. A remnant of a wall painting, also dating from around 1300, has been preserved on the north wall of the nave. It depicts an angel in an orant pose with two attendants. The church also retains a timber-framed bell chamber from the late Middle Ages.
Historical evidence can also be found beyond the church: the fountain at Plattas is the oldest fountain in Flerden. A chapel dedicated to Saint Leonard is documented from 1466. Grosshof Flerden was mentioned in 1156 as “Flirden” and, together with the farmstead of Urmein, belonged to the possessions of Cazis Abbey. The Mazzaspiel is well documented in Flerden; its game pieces were incorporated into the municipal coat of arms.
Everyday Life and Connections
The village shop stocks a wide range of everyday essentials and includes a café that is considered a popular meeting place. From Flerden, you can reach Thusis by postbus in about fifteen minutes. As a separate guideline, allow around 20 minutes for the journey to Chur. You can take these approximate travel times into account when choosing where to stay and planning visits to both towns.
