Hiking trails with different themes

TrailCaldar is a puzzle trail with twelve stations based on the legend of Gion Caldar. It leads through forests and meadows and continues to Fardün. In this way, it combines a specific route through the landscape with a narrative theme: the legend provides the theme for the stations, while forests and meadows form the setting for the trail. If you enjoy following a cultural theme while hiking, TrailCaldar offers a clear point of connection. The trail is therefore aimed at hikers who appreciate puzzles and a local legend as a thematic framework.

The Libi circular route also passes through Fardün; Farden is also part of the Schamserberg Churches Circular Route. The routes have distinct, recognizable focuses: TrailCaldar is a puzzle trail, Libi is identified as a circular route, and the Schamserberg trail is explicitly associated with churches. If you are looking for a particular theme to guide your planning, you can choose between a legend, a circular route and a focus on churches.

Location and setting

Farden, called Fardün in German, is a village settlement in the municipality of Muntogna da Schons, in the Viamala region of the canton of Graubünden. It lies at an elevation of about 1,164 metres above sea level on the lower Schamserberg. Its location describes the landscape setting; the municipality, region and canton place Fardün in its administrative context. Livestock farming is predominant in Farden.

Churches and historic traces

According to the 2020 inventory, the Reformed Church of Fardün is listed in the Park Plan as a cultural asset of regional importance. The Chapel of St. Nicholas was endowed in 1407; its ribbed vaults were built by the master builder Georg Murer of Chur in 1517. The regional classification applies to the Reformed Church, while the endowment date and ribbed vaults relate to the chapel. This brings together a classification of the cultural heritage and specific information about the building’s history.

Farden was first mentioned in 1219 under the name “de Faldaone.” Another historical reference is the “Donat–Patzen–Fardün” route. In 2020, the Inventory of Historic Transport Routes in Switzerland listed it as an object of local importance; its description notes that much of its historic substance has been preserved. The historic castle site of La Tur may have been the seat of the Lords of Patzen. Together, this local and architectural history adds a historic transport route and an explicitly uncertain interpretation of the castle site to the picture of Fardün.
